I learned to use hjkl(yubn) by playing Crawl on a macbook which doesn't have a numpad so it was impossible to move diagonally otherwise. Nowadays I don't even need to think about using any of those keys for moving around. In fact, I use t

Something like that is probably possible with NFC tags. My phone doesn't support them so I can't give details, but I'm fairly certain it's doable.

The nice thing about Haskell is that you can have a million data types with different names, and as long as they're capable of implementing the type classes you are using, you can pretty much freely switch between the different underlying t

I'm sorry, I don't see the problem. You can encapsulate away the state behind an opaque type so that it can be only accessed by functions that you have defined. Whether this is a good choice is up to the programmer, but it's common practice

Could you explain why a monad is unencapsulated? As far as I can tell, using monads is a far superior way to encapsulate state, since it's impossible to use the state without also operating within the type universe that you've defined for

How's the performace? I tried a beta of Quantal a couple weeks ago and Unity was so slow compared to vanilla Gnome that it wasn't really usable (I have a Radeon HD 3000 card, using the FOSS driver). I hope it's not that bad in the actual re

I think without this ability to "game" the system SO wouldn't be half as good as it is now. You end up with brilliant and above all complete answers that can be kept up to date, and the moderation policy reduces duplication and clutter, ke

Clojure is slower than Java in general, but strives to provide you the tools that you need to write code "as fast as java" when you need it, eg. via type hints (to avoid the need for reflection). Clojure's interop with Java is also differen

The thing most people seem to miss is that you can't actually mutate a commit in git. You can only appear to do so by removing the old commit and replacing it, and all of its children if it has any, with new commits. If someone depends on y

I think the "if it compiles, it works" has to do with Haskell's type system being much more expressive than most static languages, and that most of your code will be declarative and pure. Purity helps because your program will necessarily b
