Personally, I have more trust in open source software than anything the vendor puts on their devices. But very often either the vendor software is only allowed to run, or you have to disable secure boot to run your own software, weakening y

My only fear is that every vendor will now have to implement secure boot and other mechanisms in order to make sure that only signed software runs on their devices, while providing no way for the customer to take ownership of the device bac

In NixOS you have only one central package store `/nix/store`, so all packages need to be installed there. This is necessary, because the software is patched to use that path. IMO patching it this way is a bit hacky, when there a

I only ever tried NixOS, but the FHS stuff there seems to only be about getting Steam and other proprietary software to work. I would suggest to have this per default, so that the only application that actually sees the real file system wou

I would consider Fedora Silverblue/CoreOS, NixOS and even flatpak as a sort of hacky way to implement that. I don't know of any PoC for this. I would guess that there might be some research budget available for that approach.

I would love to see a Linux distribution picking up on the concept of NixOS, with its content-addressed-package store and then use overlayfs and bubblewrap to create process local FHS compatible root file systems with only the dependencies

I owned a Kobo Glo and Pocketbook Touch, and I preferred the Pocketbook, because it allows to install koreader as a application into the stock firmware, while on Kobo you need to quasi dual-boot your system into koreader or stock firmware v

I am a bit disappointed. I though this was about the Linux perf tool and would make a point that better tools are required while providing some suggestions. All I got was a piece that more or less states that generic benchmarks are not as u

This is a pretty useless poll when trying to compare MacOS, Windows and Linux usage, because they split Linux up into different distributions. Because adding all numbers up, you get >100%, I suppose multiple-choice were allowed, which do

A lot comes down to how people measure success. In a capitalist system, success is often measured as having the most bucks, be it deserved or undeserved, how they got them, or how many people were ripped off on the way doesn't matter.

Named pipes don't work? Or some bash magic: `handbrake-cli -i <(cat video-file.mp4)`? I never used handbrake-cli, only used the gui before, so I have no idea.

Well, this is a company that creates Linux laptops. So if they decide to offer laptops with dGPU, they might want to use hardware that is well supported by Linux. Laptops with Nvidia dGPUs are available from many/most other manufacture

This isn't dogmatic, it is practical considerations. From experience, open-source drivers that are integrated into the kernel and open-source source user space have much better quality, better out-of-box experience, and push the whole

Strange, for a company, advertising to the Linux community, to offer only Laptops with Nvidia dGPUs, where you actually have to taint your kernel/userspace with proprietary software in order to use it.

I still don't get how that would solve the issue of having no linux drivers. Lets say I create a new GPU IP core, i give it to a third-party chip manifactorer to produce it, then that delivers it to a fourth-party to burn a privat key
