I started doing this manually by creating a bookmark folder with links to individuals and groups in Facebook. Rather than just open FB and see the lousy news feed, I just click on my finite list of links to catch up. No ads, much less time.

I've also done the "no-follow" approach. I have a Twitter bookmark folder and a Facebook bookmark folder with bookmarks directly to people or groups I do want to check on. No news feed. Also no ads it turns out!

Awful lot of ammo that misses completely. Not a very efficient weapon or just poor targeting it seems.

My takeaway from these comment threads is no one is really quite sure how uPnP actually works.

What US society is struggling with is what to replace church with. It provided community and mutual support, but combined it with a myth that many could not accept any longer. The big question is what can provide the community and mutual su

For years I've thought full autonomous driving is never going to be practical without an equivalent engineering effort on the road infrastructure side of things. Standardized markings, drive by wire, special AI compatible lanes, etc. W

Most of Alaska is already an hour "further east" than it should be during standard time. This just makes it even worse. Mid day is between 1 and 2pm for much of the state during ST, and between 2pm and 3pm during DST.

I've heard it said that Americans all think they are potential millionaires and billionaires that have temporarily hit a down patch. That's why democratic socialism will never fly here except for isolated programs.

Decline of churches is one aspect. Society is becoming more secular, and there is nothing replacing those weekly religious services. There are no replacement "myths" that groups can cohere around.

Just discovered your blog via HN. I love writers who keep this old history around and can really go deep into the rabbit holes. Thanks for that.

It is cool, but now that it's on HN, it may get enough visibility to attract the Big Apple's attention.

Hope you're right. I worry that Dan has seen this movie play out time and again over the millenia, and it frequently doesn't end well.
