1. Nobody is making that assumption. I already described two ways non-housing expenses go up with real estate. There are many more. 2. Cities need to build schools, water pipes, roads, traffic signals, etc when new people move to the area.

Every city does it so until someone comes up with relevant numbers I have to assume it's a wash. The only time it comes up is when people want to justify treating people inhumanely because "they're not from here".

When housing gets more expensive it has a cascading effect. Need a plumber? That just got more expensive because that guy either has more expensive housing costs or commutes from farther away. Want a coffee? That coffee shop's rent has

No, limiting them to the highest bidders means they'll actually be used to bring in only the most talented and skilled. That will grow the size of the pie and the entire country wins. Resume the brain drain.

It's always companies that specialize in offshoring caught doing this. Why do these companies get H1B visas when there are companies willing to pay better that don't? Turn H1B into an auction. Lotteries are a terrible way to alloc

There's a big gap between a "day fine" and taking someone's house because their kid stashed some drugs in the closet. One is proportional and happens on conviction while the other can be nuts.

1. We'll get a cheaper dollar that makes US exports more competitive. 2. It will be harder for our government to do things that make the rest of the world hate us. US citizens might be better off with a less powerful government.

Free trade vs protectionism is not a one dimensional spectrum. I can't recommend How Asia Works highly enough as a source of nuance in why protectionism has worked for some and not others. https://www.amazon.com/How-As

Making people permanently dependent doesn't work either. This country has entire communities subsisting on Medicare and social security. We don't need more of them. There's plenty of space in the places that have jobs and no

Solving big problems works better when you can solve the small problems they're composed of. First figure out how to catch, kill, or deter a mouse and then expand the solution to the rest of the house. You're way to focused on the

I'm glad you've been so selfless. That doesn't mean the Federal government is going to do the first thing about homelessness. Nor does it mean elasticity of demand has the same slope in all markets. The city of San Francisco

If you want to see what cheap housing and food without economic opportunity go to rural West Virginia. It doesn't work well. The first steps you describe need to be followed by incorporating people back into the economy.

There's cheaper housing outside of cities already and it doesn't solve the problem. Only housing near economic opportunity means anything. It's cities that have the jobs and make policies that drive up the cost of housing. Th
