If I'm in 5 chat rooms, does it make that much of a difference if they're on one platform or 3? Messaging and social networks have much bigger network effects than slack and spectrum.

I think you're ignoring that this is FOSS. What are they really depending on Spectrum for? Download the data, run the software yourself, and you no longer need them. The one exception seems to be that it's hosted at a Spectrum own

I don't mind advocating against regulatory capture in general. If nothing else, improved access to this data will make the Westlas/LexisNexis industry more competitive. There are a lot of ways governments generate revenue even if

I'd argue that there's lower hanging fruit. The loss of jobs to automation just hasn't become a problem yet. When you look at the economic prospects of the California poor, there have jobs, but housing costs consume a large a

I suspect the reason for IRA vs 401k is entirely regulatory. For any values I try in a spreadsheet, paying the taxes up front results in larger post-tax amounts later (as long as the initial income tax rate is greater than capital gains rat

I don't think the author is saying tech debt is ONLY fixed on Fridays. Companies have a hard time prioritizing things that only engineers can see. Especially small things. So some form of reserved engineer bandwidth for tech debt can b

Iirc, they were charging for their mobile OS while Android was given away (only requiring the gsuite). MS was also later to launch an app store. So the mobile OS layer is where MS use to make money and it's what Android commoditized.

I find the Monocle library does a good job of describing the motivation for type optics: http://julien-truffaut.github.io/Monocle/ Where I've used this in real code is via circe-optics (json parsing). An example:
