That depends on the complexity of the bot. A general purpose bot might not get through a complex process, but someone could spend just a few minutes to customize a bot to a particular site. CAPTCHAs are reasonably good at stopping bots.

I see karma in the sense of politics. In the case of Hacker News, each person is given a vote on each of the submissions--essentially electing the best stories to appear on the front page. This is a direct democracy, which has some shortcom

I have another idea--why not just give people on the leaderboard the ability to "downmod", except it wouldn't affect the points of the submission, just increase the gravity so it drops off the front page quicker.

I've actually used these IR ranging sensors before. They have circuitry built-in, so the interface is really simple (the drawbacks are that the output is non-linear with respect to distance, and the time between outputs is kind of slow ~50m

I agree that the "most commented threads" isn't exactly a "best of" list--in fact, they're some of the more controversial/ugly threads to appear on YC, but that's why I found it interesting.
