My school library's subscription gets me unlimited access to the service. I wasn't aware about the book expiration issue. Good to know about it because I'll be graduating soon and I plan to subscribe to the service on my own.

I think you should introduce her to Raphaeljs ( http://www.raphaeljs.com ) and let her explore javascript by making things that she can see and interact with and show off to her friends. Bonus: A perfect IDE for her would probably be jsFidd

I think you're better off focusing on the views (HTML/CSS/JS parts) for now and outsourcing the backend stuff to someone else. Perhaps you can take over the development after you have a good handle over programming (and/or writing rails app
