I've spent a lot of time thinking about him and his ideas over the years but I really don't want to spend more time on him honestly. A few thoughts: * His view of UFOs is very unscientific and sensationalist * His view of Cryptocu

I had been reading Marginal Revolution and following Cowen for probably 5 years but I finally completely gave up on him. At first I was deeply impressed and considered him someone who was unafraid to confront challenging issues with thought

Several years ago I realized that the answer to "why" for me was that I found it entertaining to read a lot of "news". When I examined this however I decided that for me it was largely a waste of time. The fact is a lot

When I was right out of college I worked with a guy who had a PhD in philosophy and had studied Kripke closely. He was working in software at the time because it’s hard to make a living as a philosopher. He gave me one of his extra copies o

Of the symbolic markers presented in the article the spikes and thorns one seems the best to me too. I think it’s very likely that modern designers could come up with some really good ideas that would better convey the danger than anything

Note: I’m neutral on the question of Nuclear power. I’m not convinced it’s the answer or that it’s horrible. This post is an attempt not to argue either side of that debate but to look at the deeper intentions of the message. ** I’ve always

I don't think you're using the term "Emotional Labor" in the usual sense [0] "Emotional labor is the process of managing feelings and expressions to fulfill the emotional requirements of a job." I do see people

I'm very religious and conservative in some ways and I think I also qualify as compassionate. I give about 5% per year to my church and probably another 0.5% to other charities (mostly local food banks). I'm probably exactly the k

I agree with you 100%. There are very good and valuable reasons to follow some of the purist “rules” around designing REST APIs. It makes them significantly easier to consume when they don’t violate the principle of least astonishment.

I think Cowen has a lot to offer and he frequently challenges me to think about things differently. But this is perhaps the least convincing argument I've ever read from him (and the commenters on Marginal Revolution seem to agree.) It

I remember paying $60 (or $70?) for Ultima VII in 1992 which would be at least $110 today. But there's no chance I'd pay $70 for a digital download today. The market has changed a lot!

One of my key takeaways from this story was just how "minor" the schism that produced this appears to me. I am a Christian and take doctrine very seriously but I find the issues that the Old Believers [0] were concerned about utte

I agree...simple credit card fraud shouldn't be counted as identity theft. There are plenty of ways for people to get your card numbers and your basic information that won't allow them to go on to more serious impersonation fraud.

A counterpoint to this that may resonate with some: * I _feel_ significantly less hopeful than I did in the 1990s. Things _seemed_ to be heading in the right direction in lots of important areas then. Now I feel significant anxiety about wh
