Alot about our system of roads and cars strikes me as crazy. Most of the vehicles on the road have only one person in them, yet weigh as much as an elephant. Nobody drives under the speed limit, which is typically fast enough to result in h

It’s not a convincing argument to say a society shouldn’t fight unwanted behavior unless it can be completely eradicated. That’s akin to saying there’s no point advertising a product unless it results in 100% of the public buying it. If 80%

I've been waiting for an excuse to compliment the mods here, without it being off-topic. They do a great job! Of course, it also helps that the community here is more reasonable than most.

If we're being pedantic, aside from "Harvard," it wouldn't have screamed much to most people in 1974: "What are all these acronyms, and what on earth is an 'operating system'?" This resume was written

I know little about Boeing, but I'm sure the amount of money at stake, if they have a serious mechanical issue, would be staggering. I don't want to fly on a 737 Max. I worry they have too much incentive to conclude every root cau

Is it complicated? You like a website, and that website is bad for the world. Coco-Cola causes tooth decay regardless of how much I enjoy drinking it.

I figure, if I avoid leaning new linguistic trends, after enough years pass, my writing will suddenly seem sophisticated. What's the payoff for mimicking internet slang and turns of phrase? A decade from now, you either sound like a ha

Thanks. I subsequently went down the Bertrand Russel rabbit hole, and wound up watching a half hour interview of his, which I just posted to HN.

In reality, when you attack a group, it gets stronger, unless it retains the same strength, or gets weaker. That’s admittedly a less satisfying rule, but at least it’s true.
