Confabulate is definitely a more suitable and sensible term for this. It’s clearly semantically more descriptive and would do a better job communicating what is actually happening. The thing is, “confabulating” will never stick. People like

Those weren’t the verbatim instructions, and as mentioned, I tried phrasing them many different ways. That said, I don’t recall necessarily trying to phrase every instruction positively, so I’ll try that. Thank you!
