I have no problem with facts. If there is currently an IQ gap between races, then that's a fact. We can study the reasons, that's fine too. But it's the potential for assigning social roles to certain groups because of some "natural" dispos

Imagine a couple of young ambitious Chinese hackers, sitting around asking themselves "what's unique about American culture that is in need of a technological solution?".

Maybe perceptions of Chinese American immigrants taint your attitude towards Chinese people. Most immigrants have to be frugal because they're poor. Most immigrants have to be cunning because they're at a severe social disadvantage. It's be

Surprisingly, they don't block all the foreign gambling sites. Maybe poker just isn't that popular, but I have several American friends who play online poker once a while from China. Porn is out of the question. You'll probably get thrown i

You make a good point, but you're missing the main point: China's internet users aren't destitute and they're growing, along with a growing middle class. Lots of farmers are very poor; they're not your market. If you've ever been to a high

Problem is, a lot of techies aren't "normal" (in the sense outlined in the article) and they've been following the scratch-your-own-itch advice.

One huge impediment of starting up in China is the legal hurdle. YC tries to help young hackers navigate the relatively easy legal formalities in the States, but China is ten times worse. Not only does it require much more money, but it als

There are a lot of side effects of the burgeoning middle class, and I'm not sure it can continue at this rate unchecked. However, it's true that more and more Chinese will be able to buy nicer things.

I tend to agree with this. What matters to the "rising middle class" isn't so much democracy or not, but how much individual freedom and lifestyle they can have. Once the sustenance issue is solved, people want higher ends - more personal f

See the "Why would I use this library over other others?" section. But chaining is the best reason. The jquery ecosystem is also growing very quickly. You can always give jquery a try alongside Prototype...just set the noConflict to some ot

You're right, if I ask the most oppressed people in a society, they will tell me everything wrong with the government. I'm sure that's no different anywhere else. My question is: what do you do about these problems? How do you curb local po

I'm not sure anything can "offset" those things, but you should consider a long duration stay as a first step towards understanding some of the issues around China. China faces distinctly different problems than the US on so many fronts, th
