As long as it's not exceedingly difficult to drop down to using mutation, having immutability by default is ridiculously nice. I don't think I appreciated it fully until I used Clojure a significant amount, but using languages wi

My understanding is you can just build an uberjar that contains all that, then just drop that jar on your sever and run it (java -jar myuberjar.jar).

What's crazy about using an extremely high level language (haskell) for web dev?

Clojure gets great performance with its immutable data structures, but no one pretends they're as fast as plain native java arrays or using mutation. It's normal in the Clojure community to drop down to using arrays or transients

Am I right in thinking that Haskell servers will likely be winning on these benchmarks after Mio is released in 7.8.1? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6198068

What's easier about deploying Go vs with the JVM? Deploying stuff I've written in Clojure has been pretty easy.

People who are going to use bad variable names and 800 line functions are probably not even worth thinking about, but if you had a bunch of mediocre programmers working in each language (perl, java, haskell), do you think their code would b

Isn't maintainability going to be significantly added by so much being statically checked? Even if people are writing functions that are internally ugly, wouldn't haskell largely enforce that those functions can't really hur

Same here. I would never call myself fluent in Spanish, but then I've seen people on my level or worse who do and it's frustrating. I've seen plenty of similar arguments online about what it means to be fluent.

What it means to be "fluent" in a natural language is probably even more disputed than with programming languages. It is a good metaphor in that sense though.

Yeah, pom files are disgusting, but leiningen (the clojure build tool) is built on top of maven and it's wonderful. [enlive "1.1.1"] instead of <dependency> <groupId>enlive</groupId>

I tried sum in GHC and it ate up my 16 gigs of ram and then crashed. I'm a noob so maybe I did something wrong, but my code was: main = do putStrLn $ show $ sum [1..1000000000]

If you don't want static typing, Clojure is my recommendation. It's a lisp, but it also emphasis functional programming (common lisp doesn't), has amazing immutable data structure, has nice syntax literals for more than just

I haven't had any trouble doing mostly pure FP with Clojure, as the general pattern is to wrap Java libraries to present a functional interface, I guess I'm curious if this is the attitude in Scala, or if you're sort of forc

I'm not sure, I haven't looked very deeply at the language, I'm not sure if most of the libraries and culture and such make use of OO, or if it's just baggage for Java interop.
