What was the upshot/benefit of this "reduced transmission" which was purchased at enormous cost? Everyone eventually got COVID anyway. How many deaths were actually prevented rather than delayed?

At times it was as though people believed no one had ever died before COVID, and never would die if only they could indefinitely avoid catching it.

I ran my personal risk profile through qcovid.org and it spat out a 1 in 80,000 chance of death and 1 in 3,000 chance of hospitalization. Any notion of taking a rush-to-market vaccine went out the window at that point. And before someone sa

There's not really even any solid evidence that Trump was hit with shrapnel.

Public opinion polls consistently showed widespread overestimation of personal COVID risk across the political spectrum, and the policy response of reaching for poorly studied therapies and NPIs reflected this.

Not going to go and try to unearth it right now but everything he is saying about the figures coming out of England & Scotland is absolutely true, I saw it laid out on Twitter with links to the primary sources in real time.

I think my favorite trick here was categorizing people less than four weeks out from their second dose, or anyone who didn't get a second dose (likely as a result of a nasty reaction to the first shot, itself a good indicator of high s

A good parallel is the U.S. campus protests in opposition to military aid for Israel's Gaza campaign, which were violently dispersed. You can find lots of instances of mostly right wingers saying they should never be able to get a job

Yeah I actually did not necessarily mean to dispute Matz's perspective there. I actually think it will benefit programming as a whole if at least one widely used language takes the path of trying to eschew explicit type annotations.

Is that really something that's been slated to be added to the language proper? I attended RubyConf and in his keynote Matz seemed pretty opposed to adding types to Ruby source, and argued in favor of automatic typing instead.

I wish I could reach for Kotlin as a kind of "Ruby with typing out of the box" but the lack of a good REPL is a real dealbreaker.

At my day job we use Ruby with Sorbet to stitch together a large number of data engineering pipelines. It's a good choice since we also often stand up small Rails apps to expose the results from those pipelines, so we can keep everythi

A single prisoner dying in a remaining camp now being used as a prison in 2024 is a far cry from making the argument that "gulags were essential to the Soviet system."

The United States was always ahead of the Soviet Union in military spending and escalating the arms race. We even have documented statements from Western architects who said the purpose was to bankrupt the Soviets.

I haven't made any argument that no gulags ever existed, or that no one was ever mistreated in them. I imagine it was especially rough to be in one when resources were being poured into ending Nazi Germany's salt-the-earth campaig

Ruby has had this in the same form as "_1" for a while (and the obvious other indexes in the case of multiple params), but I agree Kotlin's "it" reads much better.
