Well, I think he got his karma back now. But yeah, the way some people downvote gives me a funny feeling.

Then he is incorrect. Modern slavery is an important problem, it should not be trivialized. Trivialized is not the right word; I am looking for an English word... when one misapplies a word and thus presents the situation direr than it is,

Yes, the title is unfortunate, in part because it is incorrect. To see that it is incorrect, one needs to define the slave consistently. Modern slavery is an important issue (for humans in general, leaving aside its relevance to HN). When t

Suicidal people usually do not exhibit much abnormal behavior for strangers to get the idea. There is little strangers can do, anyway. Even professionals can only help when the person genuinely wants to be helped. This is sad, but this is l

I tried it. I tried vi, vim, gvim. I now use a number of editors and IDEs. Vim is not not of them. I launch it once in a while, just so I would not forget how it feels (and would not forget how to :wq). That's all. As far as the holy flame

Heh, it does not pain me at all to say that Java is better than PHP! PHP, in turn, is better than Fortran, Cobol and the original Basic, and I guess that's about it. (And I am not even sure about Fortran.)

The trend is encouraging. But I am afraid it is reversible. In any case, I wish them good luck.

Yes, Java is strong. And JVM is good. So, instead of fighting the big guy, a smart way is to coopt it (see Scala, Groovy, Clojure, etc).

Could you just write: "Murder is shown to cause death", or do you need to mention the "data"?

I think you presented the list very well. Several points have been touched on already, I will mention one: DSL. I agree that the perception of it as a barrier to entry in a project may exist. I think it is as incorrect as tying Lisp to AI,

The trend for Clojure is encouraging, however when comparing it with the trend for Common Lisp, one has to keep in mind that the latter is often called simply Lisp. A slight decline in the trend for Common Lisp may be related to an increase

Yes, and this, I think, has so far been the largest contribution of lisp. Not too bad! And if Clojure becomes a widely used language, so much better. :-) That's still a big "if", of course.

You say: "it was considered undesirable for a Jewish player to beat Botvinnik". What, Botvinnik was not Jewish? That's news to me. I am sure there may have been some pressure, perhaps a lot of pressure, but Jewishness is unlikely to have pl
