Are salaries in the UK really that low? I live in the EU, my salary is similar to the OP and I just started working as a developer _this year_, with 5 years of a fairly unrelated career prior to that.

If you're comfortable with JS, you don't need a book to learn TS. There are two main resources I would recommend: - for those who prefer written content, the TypeScript Handbook [1] - for those who prefer video content, the first

There are a lot of other great languages, but none of them run in the browser. Once you know that your frontend is in TS, there are a lot of advantages to writing the BE in it also. Like I said, there are exceptions, but it has become my de

v10 is in beta and will go into RC fairly soon. I'd put my money on a 2022 final release. I'm already using it in production and it's rock solid. Only complaint is still having to restart the TS server in your editor occasion

TypeScript is the best thing to happen to web dev, and it keeps getting better. My only gripe is that sometimes in a codebase that is heavy on inferred types I need to restart the TS server occasionally. Nonetheless, unless there is a speci

Great question. I always recommend Anna Karenina as the one book everyone should read, but maybe it's actually a terrible thing to recommend to someone who Doesn't Like Reading. I don't have an answer for you, but you got me

Same. It certainly had its flaws, but it was ahead of its time in many ways. At the time I was traveling a lot and didn't need much power so it was perfect for me. It seems I got extremely lucky as I never had keyboard issues with mine

I've been using Anki for language learning and it's a superpower. After just over two years I passed an exam that requires a passive vocabulary of about 10,000 words. Other people who grinded harder than me have managed it even fa

If it wasn't for 1. maps/transit directions (Google Maps is the only service that is useful for this where I live) 2. video calls with family, I would probably be OK with an early 2000s Nokia. But I want both of those things, so I

Testing people's ability to learn irrelevant stuff in their free time mostly tests how much free time they have and whether or not they're willing to sacrifice it to learn irrelevant stuff.

It's not though, it's a test of how hard you've studied for algo problems. Relevant for some programming jobs, but not for most.

I take basically all calls and remote meetings while walking when possible (ie I don't need to refer to stuff on the computer). Sometimes it's outside, others I'm just pacing back and forth in my apartment. I find my performa

It seems like a fantastic laptop, but for people who are just buying one for themselves (vs 100+ for a corporate fleet) I don't think it's a great value proposition right now. A base model M1 MacBook Air can be bought refurb from

I actually like the look a lot, although I don't see it as a big selling point because the first think I'd do is put it in a case. Other than that it seems like a well balanced midrange device (depending on whether or not the came

Zuckerberg is fundamentally right [1], and I think it's a good observation that many people fail to make. But I think it's companies other than Facebook/Meta that are creating the new value. [1] https://clickhole.c
