Novice level posts are great. Someone found something exciting to them, not new to us, but we should encourage them to keep exploring and writing.

The math in this article is wrong. Assuming companies file for bankruptcy at the same pace throughout the year, this article is simply multiplying the number of current startup bankruptcies by 2, but it was filed on August 4, day 216 of the

This is the first time I've seen a WorldsAway reference outside of my friend group of former CompuServe employees. I remember during that time first switching over to cable internet, and how my provider was adamant that you not run a w

This is type of thing I've seen Eric O. over at South Main Auto[1] fix in dozens of videos. Mad troubleshooting skills, works hard to find root causes of things. He's pretty amazing, hidden away in some no-account town in upstate

Yep, still alive. He plans on being shot in the back while fleeing from a jealous husband in 2043, according to his Stanford bio[1] 1 - https://web.stanford.edu/~learnest/

That's pretty funny. I worked at a unix shop and occasionally got a kick out of things like the following, if I ever saw one of my buddies logged in at the same time as me: echo 'Terminal overheating, please blow on screen' &

Don't stop caring. Caring is good, you should care about things. Caring is humbling. It helps you see the damage your actions and attitude cause people. I doubt you walk around flipping off your coworkers and knocking their plants over

Good lord, I've had that wrong for ten years! Thanks for the correction. I think I was blending NAND into his name.

This reminds me somewhat of Nicod redefining Sheffer's Stroke as NAND instead of NOR. (edit: Use the correct name)

That's awesome! Ironically, Xmodem wouldn't have worked well over CIS's network, since to talk to the X25 nodes you had to have software flow control enabled in your modem connection. Small transfers might work, but when you

I’ve always seen “phreaker” on 80’s era BBSes. This is the first time I’ve seen “phone phreak”. Maybe regional differences in us old school nerds?

Originally I used BLACK, WHITE, SOUND, and tried to guess from there, occasionally throwing in GRUMP if the word wasn't obvious. I didn't like the repeated vowel, and knowing if there was a Y in the word would help, so I switched

The site uses an inline CSS statement to set the font size. I like the attempt, though. I could go off on an old-man tangent about "kids these days don't even know what a fieldset is!" or whatever, but I very much appreciate

You're confusing literacy with numeracy. To give you a counter-example to what you're saying, my son reads above grade level, but has math anxiety, and would struggle with some of the questions that mixed percents and fractions, e

After looking at a handful of questions, I'd want a teacher who couldn't initially pass this test to be trained in math at this level first, but not disqualified from teaching. Teach them what they need that they're missing.

I don't think it's planned, it's just how things tend to turn out. At least for the three startups I've worked with. If you're really good at cranking out code before your fledgling company runs out of money, that d

A pattern I've seen a lot of is people joining a young startup as the founding engineer, and then move to an engineering director role once the company gets a good round of funding. Eventually the startup will push them out, where they

Right. I vaguely remember when that happened. I think USR was trying to rush a 56k modem out before Hayes, so they invented their own protocol instead of waiting for ANSI to standardize V.90.

There's a picture of the Drunken Canal newspaper at the top of the NYT article you're talking about, and the very text you nitpick mentions "the publication's unmarked white newspaper box" so saying it's unclea
