I think thee crappy apps are mostly a scam and hurt Apple and all of us devs. Sure, Flashlight is trivial but at least it works. Night Vision is a true lie and feels like adware/spyware is invading the IOS world.

the guy built the exokernal project at MIT. you work with the tools you have. Apple 2 at the time and later radically new OSs.

of course you don't have the degree when you apply and get accepted. the whole point was the guy didn't have a high school to go to, wouldn't ever get a degree, and MIT was awesome enough not to care.

Agree re email. But this can be done in a right way and a wrong way. Right way = new york times explicitly asking you for your email upon registration and respecting email spam rules. Wrong way - data mining off facebook.

I think a non-profit press is one solution. It just doesn't seem to be the solution favored by Americans. Given that, it's probably best to have a selection of well written for profit news sites with different points of view (NYT, WSJ etc

I think a lot of times the "hard" part is a prerequisite for the easy part. Think of UGC sites - the hard part are contributors. Without contributors you can't even begin to go after readers.
