This is a really great introduction to Couch, and if you like this model of working with data, you can keep exploring as soon as installing Couch. The database has a fantastic admin console that lets you explore your data, create and edit

Another cool tool in this world is CouchDB. A local instance can replicate back and forth with a master when available, and you can serve an entire app right out of the DB.

"Adding insult to injury, one of the most common cases is an uninitialized variable." Somebody needs to turn on compiler warnings!

This is a really fantastic way of providing examples. It's very well written and everything just works, and it's very simple and easy to understand. I wish the Processing.js docs looked like this.

Well, for one, Apple has been doing mobile device sales in their stores for longer than Square has even been a company.

Lots of datastores don't keep everything in RAM though. CouchDB uses up a whole ton of disk, because disk is cheap and the way the database is structured the disk reads aren't even a problem for performance.

But once again, all my friends who I'd ever want to video chat have Facebook, and I still can't get my + invite to work. For a majority of users, Facebook will have done it first, even if + really did.

What input device would be the best way to play Angry Birds, then? Having played the Mac App and Chrome App versions, I definitely think touch makes the most sense.

Time without a time zone is not meaningless. I don't need my calendar to be aware of when in the day the other side of the phone call is happening. I just want to enter "Dinner at 8pm" and have dinner stay at 8pm. This is one situation w

I don't want to tell it that though. I just want to enter things at a time, and have them stay at that time.

Though, in calendar apps, I find this behavior annoying. My phone automatically adjusts my calendar when I change timezones, but I put all events into my calendar as local time for wherever I will be when that event is going to occur. I d

Though I love CoffeeScript, I feel it's very important to understand how JavaScript works. It's a great language, but only if you understand what is going on, and why you do have to use hasOwnProperty.

I find it hard to believe they are saying it is a more modernist design. Modernism was a very specific aesthetic, I believe they mean contemporary.

Seriously. I've been spending the week writing views and lists for CouchDB. Working in CoffeeScript (for the syntax) and using JS patterns has made me the happiest camper.

Most of us don't care about that though. If Twitter goes under, I'm not going to want my tweets back or my friendlist back. I'm going to want Twitter back.

Interesting! Too bad Google doesn't list that limitation, eh? Since I don't have a Windows machine to access right now, what size is "larger pixel sizes?" I'd like to know what I'm working with.

I mean, I knew Chris years ago and his language of choice was Ruby, and I don't think it's changed. Sure basic install-ability is great, but I bet you this tool was made to satiate an itch he had, and he used the tools he's used to. Little

He makes great points about MacRuby. I started tooling around with it for an app a few months ago, and though it was a great interface, it didn't make working in Cocoa any easier, and I still had to learn a lot of weird technology choices

Well, I think the number of users on 5.0 will go up a lot when 5.0 is actually released... But really, 5.0 has a huge upgrade-incentive, and I think it will be pretty safe to assume people who know how to save a webapp to their homescreen w

You can also use Enumerable#map and Enumerable#reduce, to use names that match the pattern (and #map is arguably more idiomatic than #collect).

If you really want to try and play with MapReduce on a dataset without going through setting up a Hadoop node (or 4), check out CouchDB. It's designed around MapReduces (though not distributed), and you even get to deal with solving re-red
