Was glad to see some facts about using ISDN for voice acting in there. When I was a teen, my interests were split between computers and theater. I was SHOCKED when I found out some of the actors I got to work with had ISDN, and not for inte

I have not read the novel, but I felt from the film that it was crystal clear that learning the alien writing system was what gave Amy Adams' character the knowledge her daughter would die. And yet, when I think about Dune 2021, I feel

A few you didn't mention that stand out to me, just because it brings me joy: - Jessica meeting Mohiam in the unrelenting rain of Caladan - The first time a transport picks up a harvester - Paul's vision of Jessica holding Alia -

I think DV was very clever in making Dune (2021) feel more like Leto I's story for a large portion of the film. Though we ramp into Paul's, we get a very satisfying focus on Leto. Of course, if you hadn't read the book you&#x

I shared this (somewhat old) post hoping old HN discussions would auto-pop-up but it looks like it wasn't discussed much at the time. I was hoping to find some elucidation of _what_ Webfinger is doing here and/or when it's ac

You've worked primarily in your own home built editor for years? That's pretty cool.

That works fine. It's when you inherit from a non-abstract model that you end up with the trickier data model.

I think the poster is specifically referring to using inheritance in Django ORM, where if you had e.g. a model Book and then a model Novel that inherits from it. In python these are modeled as a class inheritance hierarchy, and Django (at

I spent many hours (back in the 1.8 days) in a Ruby focused irc chat room with some guys, many who went on to found relatively interesting companies (hey Evan and Chris :) ). I was just a teen, Rails was huge, and _why was writing some of t

Ben Eater does have a handful of early videos on his YouTube page that gave me a much better understanding of what's happening down at the physical and particle level. But at the end of the day, to succeed with this material you just n

The Salesforce CRM application somewhat "famously" does not use native DB foreign keys to model most relationships, and has a custom relational integrity and indexing layer. Mostly, this is in order to support our complex custom s

I've been in the habit of replacing the default manager for my model with one with an annotated query set. that way, any Model.objects.all() call will have the computed fields. I find this pretty easy to get used to and re-use. though

GeneratedField looks interesting, but I'm not _really_ sure what gains I get over just calling annotate() on my queryset with some computed fields. At least on the backends where the computed GeneratedField isn't stored.

Peeps are the type of thing that, once you realize what's going on, you can solve a whole new class of problems as if by magic. The cpython compiler's peephole optimizer is an easy code read and a great example of this in practice
