The problem with the idea of “everyone working less” is that some people won’t work less. Even now, there are people who work more than 40 hours / week. Someone who works 25% more than you will make 25% more wages and will afford a 25%

How about public utility districts? In my town, most of our utilities are public utility districts that are a private company with a publicly elected board of directors. Our electric company, SMUD, is fantastic with excellent customer servi

Another angle on a solution: start your own gas company with competitive margins. Easier said than done, obviously. But maybe we should try to make it easier? I can imagine a downward spiral of government regulation creating moats for compa

Something I’m not seeing mentioned here: I read somewhere (though i can’t find it) that we don’t have small trucks in the US because fuel economy standards are based on wheelbase. That’s why you can’t take an F-150 and put it on a smaller f

I’m curious to hear more about the difficulty of breaking DC current. I was also thinking planning to research more into GFCI for DC current. Seems like it’s possible if you tie the negative terminal to ground just like with AC but that fee

Yeah totally. I think the main hurdle is just the fact that a DC circuit isn’t saving any significant money… But as a quality of life improvement, I could totally see this as a selling point for rural homes: 100% off-grid for everything exc

Subscriptions would be cool, allowing you to leverage this library for state management. Add an async storage interface so you can persist and you’ll have an awesome little database.

Yeah, but the annoying thing (from an engineering elegance perspective) is that most of those appliances that are on 230VAC convert to 12-48VDC internally (e.g. TV/monitor, LEDs).

Yeah, I think PoE is 48V but it would be cool for adding connectivity to everything. WiFi more or less solves that problem these days though.

That would be close, but you’ll end up with more annoyances if you remain focused on the FileSystem. - auto-generated file names are gross. - 50+ imports in each file with bogus file names is gross The FileSystem itself is a gross way to o

It’s always frustrating to me to see an inverter in these setups. All of your digital devices actually run on DC current! Your computer, monitor, phone charger… Inverters consume energy just being on, whether current is being drawn or not.

I’ve been curious about this topic for a while primarily because I’ve found that issues with circular dependencies/imports in my projects are simply a consequence of their organization into files. If every exported variable or function

You make some good points in here, but I don't think it's the full story. From my perspective (first eng at Notion), I think what the sales pitch that really captures people's imagination is these situations where "the w

I created something similar to this [1] a few years ago. Before the proliferation of web crypto apis, I just used a WASM’d libsodium. It adds some page weight but whatever… My use-case was for traveling, it seems like a good idea to have a
