I'd still call that multi-cloud ;) I've done something similar in the real world. We used cloudflare for our dns / application firewall, but we kept a route53 zone mirrored after cloudflare had a spat of issues. It would ha

You will never find a tool that does a good job of translating between different platforms like that. The systems are too different, and the details matter too much. The value of being multi-platform is that it lets you manage resources in

Thanks for the correction! I've never used Pulumi directly, and thought it was just a wrapper around terraform providers. Do you think it changes anything about how I've characterized it above?

I have a few years of experience with terraform (pulumi is built on terraform), and moved to a place using CDK about a year ago. From what I've seen, CDK is worse than terraform, and I would expect it to be strictly worse than pulumi.

I've done a few postgres upgrades, the first using pg_upgrade, and the last doing effectively what you did (it was even 9.x -> 12). My experience was that it needs to rewrite all the data for some tables/indexes under some circ

This very much reminds me of the riddle in Game of Thrones: "In a room sit three great men, a king, a priest, and a rich man with his gold. Between them stands a sellsword, a little man of common birth and no great mind. Each of the gr

You need a license because there are still some restrictions on marriage: - Only 1 marriage at a time. - Must be old enough. - Must not be too closely related. - Etc.. The marriage license handles the step of verifying those things. It

I like CacheIO.. I may use that. Thanks :) That could be one application of this. My goal is to make a system that can work on top of any filesystem, without direct support for it in the filesystem. This way you could use it to speed on

Wow, somehow I completely missed that another CacheFS exists. I will definitely be looking for a new name.

Oddly enough if you play through Portal with commentary on they talk about this constantly. Test players never looked up and they had to do elaborate things with the level design to simply get people to look up.

We've built a decent system here that relies on ant, make, vs_2003, .bat files, and some custom python scripts. It even works on both platforms (windows/redhat)! </sarcasm> I've played around with CMake also, and I've found it to

I agree with others that this problem skinks of an electrical/software issue. Drive-by-wire can be made safe. All fighter jets made since the 70s have been fly-by-wire. Their airfoils are inherently unstable (unstable airframes are more

I really like the idea of teaching asm first for adults. I really didn't understand what I was doing in C until I'd learned assembly. I think it would be interesting to have a college curriculum that started out in asm the first year, and

Oh, I didn't mean that as a dig against llvm. I would say llvm and the jvm are solving different (but related) problems.

The simple answer is that LLVM does not come with a garbage collection system, and the JVM does.

We had something similar at Purdue. In fact, we were frequently given an example 'correct' program whose output we needed to match exactly. It took me much longer to get register assignment in my compilers' class to match the professor's

This has been said already, but I"ll say it again; the maths you need are concepts like symbol manipulation, logic. Beyond that the only math you need to know is related to the problem you're trying to solve with a program. I'm currently t

My college loans are by far the best investment I've ever made. I went to a good in-state public school (Purdue), and lived very cheap. If they weren't at less than 3% interest they would have been paid off in one year from the extra mon
