It's inclusive in R, Julia, Matlab, Fortran and presumably most languages use 1-based indices by default.

For timezones the official[1] answer is to use TimeZones.jl. For async code Julia has "tasks" which are similar to goroutines in Go: they can be multiplexed on a number of OS threads for parallelism, and channels can be used to co

Well of course only the huge companies can develop products that require enormous resources. But I'm not too worried here because everyone gets access to larger datasets every year, and it gets cheaper to process every year, so whateve

This analogy seems way off to me. It completely misses the fact that Google is doing what it's supposed to do which is giving the user the information they're looking for. I don't think cutting power is giving the customer (r

I wonder if a stable driver interface could also result in higher driver quality: if the same driver keeps working across many versions, even with relatively few users it could aggregate incremental improvements from various parties?

That's also what I understood, but I'm asking if that's really an argument in favor of H2 vehicles: with electrical vehicles we can also store excess power as H2. Of course we then need to burn it in power plants to convert b

If we're going to store energy by generating H2, is it more efficient to consume it in small cars rather than in big plants that convert it back to electrical power on demand?

I think "lots of syntax" means many rules to learn, rather than many characters to type. So this change means even more syntax.

Was this improved in recent versions? I tried the following in Julia 1.6-rc1 and they run instantly: @time v = [(1:10_000)...]; -> 0.000639 seconds f(args...) = sum(args) @time f(v...); -> 0.001039 seconds

I think you're missing the point of touch mode: mouse and touch actually work fine in both modes. The touch mode is just there to demonstrate how Flutter adapts the layout depending on the target modality: see how the controls get larg

I like Julia a lot, and I think it's the best option for ML research, but isn't there a big advantage to Swift or similar languages when it comes to production deployments on mobiles? The distribution of compiled binaries in Julia

CPU instructions like load and move can apply an offset that is encoded as part of the instruction. This is more flexible than a special instruction for "offset=1", and useful beyond 1-based indexing. See for example https:/

I think the question "does it make it larger or does it describe how it gets large?" implies that the transformation is increasing.

I quite disagree, I think it makes two insightful points: 1. In this discussion, people often overlook that these numbers are applied to two different concepts: offsets and numbering. 2. If C had been designed with 0-based pointers (for off

Regarding the mathematical advantage: it depends on the subfield, but I think 1-based numbering is more common in mathematical notation and algorithms (linear algebra being a prominent example). Regarding performance: some mentioned that th

To be consistent we should redefine a few more things, e.g. when we take the 0th element of a list we have 0 elements, when we take up to the 1st element we have 1 element, etc. Joking, but I think there's always be a mismatch somewher

Octave on Linux has no problem with UTF-8 filenames, it can read from and write to such files without problem. It's true you cannot use non-ASCII UTF-8 names for script and functions, since in that case the file name is also the comman

This isn't related to Matlab compatibility... Matlab uses UTF-16 internally but recent versions work with UTF-8 input seamlessly (converting automatically). Octave uses UTF-8 on Linux which works well, but last time I checked has broke
