In theory, "real democracy" says that if the latter condition isn't met (i.e. people in power do not have public approval), then the former condition (rigged elections) must be true. No one should be in power if the majority of the public d

I assumed that it was going to be publicly cremated, but I'm not going to complain about a burial at sea. The important thing is that it doesn't become a rallying symbol, or an object of international controversy. Having it rest at the bott

Partially historic, yes. It was faster/easier for students to write their AI programs in lisp than in any other languages for a long time. Between functional programming, an REPL, and macros, you could find yourself doing a lot with a littl

Which programming language do you learn first? The one your friends use. If your friends don't program (or you don't have any friends), learn Python.

Knowing a domain and being able to predict success in it are two very different things. EDIT: A better example. Before Ford released the F-150, it seemed to be a solution in search of a problem. It was somewhere between the F-100 and F-250

This reminds me of Ballmer's claims that Linux infringes on Microsoft patents. They ultimately resulted in nothing, I see this heading in the same direction. It seems more like a scare tactic than anything else. If they really wanted to go

I've never heard that chess saying before. That's one to remember. "Only good players get lucky."

I think GWT would be most useful to data-driven apps/services that need a web interface. All of your heavy data mining can be done in highly optimized Java, and then you won't need to context switch in order to implement your web frontend.

Do you support FreeBSD when you release code for Linux? I thought not. Same thing here.

Sometimes it's hard to cheer for sports teams when you see the havoc their fans wreak. I used to think Chicago had it bad, but I have since learned that we're actually pretty tame when it comes to sports riots (at least until the Cubs final

Could you possibly share a little bit more about the kind of work you do and why Go has become the clear winner over C++/Java? I, for one, would really love to learn more about Go.

Say what you will about Apple, their products, or their business model, but I've always found their engineers to be the pinnacle of quality and hacker culture.

Came here to say the very same thing. I remember when Chrome came out, their team said that they weren't trying to mess with Firefox, and that hopefully by keeping Chromium open source, they would enter a mutually beneficial race to create

Twitter has no privacy model, so there can't be any privacy outrage. All tweets are public, it's just a matter of whether or not they show up on your feed. And if Twitter wants to make an extra (maybe morally gray) dime off of any "privacy

The French have adopted Ubuntu as their primary systems. Stock markets now run on Linux. So does whitehouse.gov. Obama's campaign servers ran on FreeBSD. It's not entirely unreasonable to see it changing. Plus, as you said, it would save th

A better question would be how can you program graphics if you're blind? That's something I would love to find out and/or solve.
