I'm sure the tech companies would be happy to hire 10x the buses they do today, if it wasn't for local residents clamoring for the SFMTA to regulate the number of buses in the city and where they can stop.

How are our experiences so different? I just got back from a trip to New York, and at least half of the retailers I visited didn't have (or use) a chip card reader.

America really needs to get its retail infrastructure upgraded, but it's not clear who is going to pay for it. A lot of companies have old computers that use magstripe readers for their point-of-sale systems. A lot of businesses have n

I highly recommend reading the light-novel translations of "In Another World With My Smartphone" as well! You can buy them on Amazon Kindle, or you can subscribe to read the pre-prints at http://j-novel.club/ .

I recall that Kik co-founder Ted Livingston tried to take a step toward changing this. He said he never would have been able to start his company without CAD$25,000 from his grandfather, so he donated CAD$1M to a local university, so they c

I felt like this chart shows that retail store closures are a lagging indicator for employment. Stores are up in NY, WA, TX -- all states where people migrate to to work in tech companies. (Not sure about ND and UT, though.)

On HiDPI mobile devices, pixels aren't real pixels. They're actually treated like points -- a pixel in CSS ends up being something like 3-ish real device pixels, plus or minus, depending on the device.

Suppose that audio captchas could be solved with 100% accuracy. Then what? How do we make sure that visually impaired users can still access the internet / solve captchas, but robots cannot?

One of the biggest challenges with self-driving cars in snow is the snow in the environment -- for example, how do you see the lane markers so that you stay in your lane?

Companies should really adopt shadow interviewing more. Go into an interview and watch someone experienced do it, so you can learn more about how to make interviews pleasant (even for a candidate that doesn't know what they're doi

Getting tech employees off cars doesn't need self-driving cars. Google is perfectly happy to have shuttle buses, and pay for them, provided that housing is sufficiently dense, and there is a place where the buses can legally pick up an

I feel like there's definitely an art to mocking. Rather than mocking out the module being called (A calls B, A_test mocks B), you want to mock out its dependencies (A calls B calls C, A_test mocks C). But if you swap out said dependen

Wasn't the Kinect technology acquired by Apple? My impression is the top sensor bar in the iPhone X is essentially a miniaturized Kinect, so we should see more Kinect-like applications now that it fits in your pocket.
