Speaking of vile hacks... has anyone here used Eunice, which allowed people to have a Unix (BSD-flavor) userland on VMS? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunice_%28software%29 Larry mentions it in the perl configuration f

For a while, Xenix was the best-selling Unix under the sun. (But not the Sun. It ran on commodity 16-bit IBM PCs.) ((I refuse to resist puns. They just flow through me.))

For all the Old People, replace Microsoft with IBM above and transpose this back into the 1990s. IBM went from EBCDIC and Micro Channel Architecture and SNA to "Well, they'll never actually beat Compaq and Dell in the primary gr

One obvious question: Is there a way to fix the problem compatibly? AMD doesn't seem to be vulnerable, so you'd imagine that code couldn't rely on this behavior because then it would fail on AMD chips, but... well, once you&#

Perhaps not Lisp in specific, but the idea of symbolic computation (that is, computers are more than Big Adding Machines) is important and should be on there.

Your inability to see that the pro-systemd side has actual reasons for holding its views makes you and the rest of the anti-systemd side ignorant and unable to discuss this on a sound footing without resorting to insults.

Your comment was a simple personal attack, and added nothing to the discussion. People can disagree with you without being stupid, you know, and not admitting that makes the anti-systemd side weak.

If I knew someone was deploying from one of my repos, changing my code to make their site ALL PONIES ALL THE TIME U GUISE would honestly occur to me. It would occur to me, and I might not be strong enough to resist. PONIES!

The 1401 wasn't a mainframe. It was a smaller computer designed to replace unit-record systems and was, in fact, sometimes used as a mainframe peripheral. The mainframe of the era was something in the 7000 or 700 series, I think.
