Sure, but UAC doesn't have to be as badly designed and implemented as it was in Windows. Allan Day has some great plans for adding this to GNOME: http://blogs.gnome.org/aday/2014/07/23/sandboxed-appl

I really wonder who this person asked, that was an "old-school Unix admin", that didn't know of this attack. This article also doesn't mention the countermeasure which is available in every utility I know of: the -- argu

Why not just use Gedit or Geany or any of the other many free software text editors available on Linux?

It's been replaced by dbus. Which does indeed have strict types and other features that might be desirable (multicast?). You raise an interesting idea: A shell that pipes materials around from process to process through dbus, and a set

I'm not a fan of this approach. Why did you build new, proprietary software instead of adding that feature to reprepo, for example? Why is packagecloud.io not giving back to the open source community when it's based on packaging t

Neat idea, but the onion routing in Tor is quite slow. You might consider cjdns instead for better performance and scalability. http://cjdns.info/

I don't find your argument to be very compelling. Let me guess: you learned imperative programming first, you're most familiar with it, and you only have limited experience with Lisp, if any? The fact that you find imperative pro

Sure, just relicense your application under the GPL. You're getting these libraries for free. If you're not at all willing to contribute back, then you're obviously not the target audience.

Yes. An easy way for someone not familiar with dbus: Use d-feet (should be in your repos) to find the running Konsole and the relevant interface, activate it and play around with it inside d-feet, and then activate it on the command line wi

Sure, but all you have to do to avoid this nightmare use the GPL. So since this encourages people to contribute their code back to the community (by releasing it under the GPL or a GPL-compatible license), I think it's a good thing.

It's called the GPL. If that's really the model they're trying to create, it would be nice if they just used the GPL.

I think you're inverting the direction of causation here. GNOME and systemd get a lot of criticism and hate on largely non-technical grounds. I think any project could develop a dismissive attitude if they were hearing constantly about

I don't think they're trying to do that at all. In fact, with the activities overview, I think GNOME is the best out of any desktop at managing and manipulating windows. I use a tiling window manager myself, but I agree with (what

Why not just use the GPL? Only those who are willing to fully open source their product can use your code commercially. I, for one, am quite willing to make that grant to anyone who will go that far.

Installing Windows as an end user on hardware that doesn't already support Windows sounds very painful. Even if you get it to boot Windows, getting all the hardware working will probably be nigh-impossible.

Unfortunately, this "port" is just running ordinary terminal Emacs inside of an Android terminal application. So it's pretty buggy and annoying to use; and you might as well just run it in a chroot.

Well, you can just kill yourself at 37, assuming you're American and pessimistically that you're male. There's no difference between that and having a "shorter" "life expectancy".

To make use of org-mode but use the familiar vim keybindings, I just use emacs with evil-mode, the vim emulation mode. It works great. I've searched for a vim-centered alternative to org-mode for a long time; this is the best way I
