Awesome slides!!! I'd heard of Piet, but never seen the primaltity tester. It really looks like a Mondrian! Another thing I really like is Typogenetics, invented by Douglas Hofstadter. It's a formal system inspired by molecular bi

Ah, there you got me wrong. I said that only capitalism has made post-scarcity even remotely possible. We're seriously discussing the possibility and implications of full automation within the next fifteen years; that never happened

Machine learning, bro. The models have way more parameters than we can possibly justify. Our predictions are meaningless outsisde the extrema of our training set. It's the future. It's a /revolution/ in AI. It's so

I find it amazing that CNN has been able to remain dominant in television news broadcasting. They're a vicious clique of bloodthirsty warmongering propagandists. You'd think people would have grown disgusted at some point in the l

I'm a vegan. I don't drink milk, ever. It's not about ethics or health or virtue signaling anymore: I've been vegan so long that I can't comfortably digest meat or milk and I can't stand the taste either. Somet

Programming is hard, but progress is being made. For example: I think Haskell is an order of magnitude easier to write than C++. It seems to me that programming languages are evolving to give programmers access to ever higher levels of abst

Not many people know TikZ well enough to spin circuit diagrams or integration contours from a class on analysis as fast as a professor can draw them on a board. While I'm skeptical that you managed this, if you did, you're a rare

Read Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. It has a few high-impact suggestions that you or someone you know might be able to put into action.

Frankly, I would be more worried about someone dying using a system that I had a hand in than whatever effect it might have on my career.

I wonder if this is age-related. I never drank much before, but since I turned 27, I've noticed that I can get drunk on one half to one-third the amount it used to take me.

Have you read Margaret Atwood's MaddAddam trilogy? It's one of my all-time favourite works of science fiction. Human beings have the (rarely used) capacity to improve the quality and usability of our surroundings. If at some point

Science can't express all of the truths about the universe. Scientists know this. What science does provide is a reliable framework for finding out some truths about the universe. So far the science approach has been very successful.

I agree that conscious machines (if such a thing is possible) will probably not be carefully designed by humans. That said, I think you should be a little more critical of deep learning. So-called neural networks are more meaningfully descr

Sure, but the dualist hypothesis doesn't explain any phenomena that can't be explained by the materialist hypothesis. There is no reason in principle why consciousness couldn't emerge from purely physical processes.

60 in 2017 => 20 in 1977. How many programming jobs were there in 1977? Plenty, sure, but not to the extent we see today. Is it really suprising that a brand-new industry is also full of young people?

It makes sense in a roundabout way. LSD was first synthesized as part of a study of ergotamine analogues. Ergotamine [1] is still used to decrease uterine bleeding after childbirth (but use has largely been replaced by a superior analogue).
