Always cool to see stuff from your niche field on hn. Note: this measurement is done at cryogenic temperatures, although somewhat similar molecular spin work (from ~same group [1]) works at ambient. [1]: https://doi.org/10.1

Yeah I understand all the flashy bits in kitty, but do you need GPU levels of speed? `foot` is much faster than my typing/brain in all cases.

> 'their own issues not unlike the US' I find this kind of opinion hard to understand. The difference is incredibly high contrast to me.

Does anyone get anything out of these GPU accelerated terminals? I am at a bit of a loss for a use-case where my CPU isn't fast enough to keep up. What I do care about is my bitmap font, which all these new terms don't seem to

Sure, but COMSOL does a lot of work for you you couldn't achieve otherwise - I find it hard to see glorified irc (slack) as ever being worth $200k a year!!!

I think you're referring to the TTFP (time to first plot) issue (the package manager is top notch). TTFP has been drastically improved with a bunch of optimisations, and then you can pre-compile your project to keep it fast e.g. betwee

Top journals have good research in them, they cannot be bought like that. The downside is that they get caught in the hype, and only publish articles likely to be more glossy. The way to clean garbage from gems is to spend half a decade plu

If the return isn't there for career scientists, and it takes them 4-6hrs to read a paper properly, then can non-specialists really get much out of the process?

Fair enough. The point of my comment was the incentives are set up in 'science' to research fundamentals (I don't think there are many interesting fundamentals in degradation, but I may be wrong). I am arguing there should be

There is no agreed upon definition of science or the scientific method. I'm sure we could agree upon a demarcation between scientist and engineer, though, and I was drawing that distinction in a way I think we can all intuit.

I disagree that science has the wrong incentives. The place for science is to chase new (e.g.) physics, not build something useful. As a society we have decided that (e.g.) physics should/shall solve our problems with better technology
