That really sucks. I'm sorry that she had such a poor experience. On our project, we've been working really hard to meet designers (and developers and users) where they are. Most of the time when someone asks how to contribute, we list the:

No... it's not sarcasm at all. It's a ridiculously complex function with nested-nested-nested conditionals in nested-nested loops. It makes puppies cry.

Either way... the original problems don't just disappear. They're with you all along until you completely replace the product. And even then, they don't disappear. Windows 98 is 12+ years old and it's still lurking around out there. Vista w

Just had a pair of major surgeries in my immediate family. When we offered to pay cash, they immediately knocked 50-66% off all the costs. That included anaesthesiologist, room rental, and doctor's time. This "retail rate" mentioned in the

Merit-based pay will never work as long as the unions and clueless administrators are in control. In early 2002, I was working with a local high school's theatre group. Since I wasn't a parent, the rules said I had to get "hired" as a teach

Also.. not particularly surprising. MapQuest hired one of OSM's community managers this summer. Good to see collaboration and innovation on top of good data.

Careful of the golden handcuffs though. Like it or not, many of the government contractors are in pretty stable multi-year contracts and are making north of 100-150k. Unless they have their finances in excellent condition, many of them can'

I was an Eclipse PDT guy (came from Java), but when [unnamed] broke PDT last year, I gave up on it. Once I picked up NetBeans, I was pretty happy with it. I found this article later on: http://daveyshafik.com/archives/743-netbeans-for-php-

A Cease & Desist would be a pretty good explanation. Part of that process is showing that you respected the owners' rights, etc. Taking down the whole site if just one publisher went after them is unlikely.. seems like there's somethi

I've worked remotely almost exclusively for 5 years now. For a handful of projects I've gone onsite for a day or two a week but those are the exception. The key is to build your reputation and network like crazy. Get to know everyone you ca

50/50 splits always make me nervous. When the site goes down at 2am, who gets called? Once the design is finished, will he be doing anything? Does this deal apply equally to clients that don't need design work? Does this deal apply to clien

Actually, you pay payroll tax just for having employees and various business registration fees for continuing to exist and taxes on equipment just for continuing to own it. None of those are dependent on profit. Reality 101.
