Google has a social network, and it isn't mentioned in the piece. But I'd bet there's little doubt Google is the most important search engine. You're right about Dribbble, but I'd argue GitHub is for collaboration and Dribbble is for show

It doesn't use jQuery or any other library; it is framework-agnostic. We had originally written it in JavaScript, but decided to use CoffeeScript simply because it's nicer to read and write.

Yes, despite being quite small (878kb) the @2x background takes a while to load. We wouldn't recommend having a 2800×1867 retina background on your site, but for the sake of the demo we wanted to do some showing off.
