The bigger point being missed is that the Gigafactory is in the US, greatly reducing import costs. That's why it is important / necessary.

That's a cool project. But that's a software pathtracer running on CUDA cores rather than a "hardware pathtracer" (whereas the pathtracing would be hard-coded into optimized hardware), right?

The more I read about Bob Iger, the more I like him. This guy knows exactly how to critique the company from the inside and has the balls to just execute on a solution that makes sense rather than tip-toeing around focus groups. His agility

Google always finds what I am looking for, which is the task of a search engine. Why is that settling?

On the contrary, they will be clamoring over this. It's a really cheap way to create entirely new rides out of old ones.

This article misses a big point on remote vs local: culture. After reading all of the articles about remote work on HN, I thought it was awesome. But I interned at a company for which most employees are remote this summer, and I found that

I'd say those are the most visible things they do, since those are pretty hard to hide. But I'd wager the lions share of the work CIA does is actually in the more boring intelligence for diplomatic operations.

No, you're probably just supposed to be intrigued by the quirky juxtaposition of a common-place occurrence (Starbucks inside x) and one of the most secretive organizations in the world and how that works. You don't have to like th

Last I checked, the target users for consumer products were consumers, not engineers...

I've never seen an engineer of a product coming on HN to defend the product in reply to negative comments work out very well...

"configurations" can be used to change code behavior, which is what the rule is designed to prevent. My money is on Apple rejecting this.

I'm confused as to why view logic is being moved to the Model layer, directly breaking MVC. Why is this better than using the tools in Rails that already exist for every use case here? Is there a performance increase?

That's a straw man though. The "pursuit of happiness" in the Declaration is just fancy phrasing for what was originally the "right to own property". It was changed by Jefferson before the Declaration was finished be

It shouldn't because getting a reliable certificate costs money and the knowledge to setup and (more importantly) secure that certificate. I don't want to pay for a certificate for every static project page I setup and worry about

This looks great! I like how this one concentrates on the back-end features more than the views. It just generates all the backend/routing and lets you put in the special view logic yourself. Good way to not get distracted trying to ma

As in Mozilla Rust? That is a systems language, nothing to do with JS (other than it is being used to build Servo, Mozilla's experimental new parallel browser engine)

Why is it "fundamentally not in my interest" for them to collect and monetize data? That's the price of using the service. Every business needs to get paid somehow.

Heroku started with just Rails. It's better to start with one language and do it well and then expand than half-ass it with everything from JS to Erlang imo. The important part is the quality of the service and the information it provi

CoreOS is a linux distro specifically created to support containerization. It has great Docker support and a built-in distributed key/value store and a container manager for orchestration and service discovery.

I think the most fundamental advantage is that Photoshop was designed to edit photos, whereas Sketch is clearly built for UI design. Because of that, it has the tools you are more likely to use in the right places and has a lot of built-in
