The fact that someone who is a university professor would remove their kids from the general education pool, makes me think they don't really understand one of the main purposes of education. If their kids were kept in normal schools w

You might just as well argue the opposite: American gas and car prices don't factor in the huge externalities of a badly engineered gas guzzler (and I don't think they are priced in in the EU either). So you get around in things t

This is something most people who have never learnt a foreign language don't get, but usually the fancier the word sounds, the more likely it comes straight from Greek or Latin and to be pretty much the same in your native language. Fo

One of my favorite stat mech facts is that you can get to inverse temperature as a Lagrange multiplier using only probability and information theory: Given a system that has many states each with energy E_i, what is the highest Shannon entr

Re: 2. I've lived in Italy for most of my life and I have never seen a pasta street vendor. Pasta is something that you eat sitting down.

You cook pasta in a pressure cooker for 24 minutes? I thought pressure cookers decreased cooking time and the longest cooking time I've ever encountered for pasta is 17 minutes.

Weird to me that you consider casarecce exotic, whereas I had to google gemelli, because I don't think I've heard that name before. I've also been exposed to a lot of training data since I spent 80% of my life in Italy.

You're not under the impression that most big budget movies nowadays are just attempts at milking the same character or universe to the maximum possible extent?

You're mixing two different ways of measuring difference. When we say we share a large portion of DNA with other species it's about the whole genome and it is mostly a statement of how similar the proteins that make life work are.

Or better yet: figure out the average dot, replicate it all over the image, and run its Fourier transform. I think that subtracting it from the original image Fourier transform and then inverse transforming the result should also work.
