Anecdata: Walk down a main commercial street in any large metropolis and count the number of completely unviable businesses (these are the ones that turn over their real estate every few months). These are further polluting the statistics.

HN readers should see this as an opportunity to hire experienced, qualified developers, systems engineers, and marketing people. Possibly for salaries lower than what otherwise would be the norm, especially in non-Bay Area markets.

There's a lot of reasons to move to LA / Santa Monica, but I'd say for the women isn't one of them. The girls in NY are much friendlier, probably due to the fact that they outnumber men and most of them aren't from NY. In LA the men still

To be fair - most of the bay area is very similar to New England, just a lot more expensive, with better weather.

I think what you mean is revenues. Profit and earnings and income are similar (but slightly different, depending on who you ask), but all 3 are on the other side of the fence from revenues.

Here's a tip for when you first get started: practice giving the throttle very small amounts of gas. In fact, when you first start out - don't even touch the gas. Idle the car on a flat parking lot in neutral and just let out the clutch v

This isn't a PR move. They are protecting their market share. If employers accessing facebook accounts become common, the cool kids will simply switch to another site while leaving a decoy FB profile. And we all know what happens when all

I've noticed this too - when speaking in front of my employees, they laugh at the strangest things - things that would not be funny if I said them at, for example, lunch.

This is absolutely not true - I know because I'm looking at one right now. I would say Mac laptop keyboards are the best that exist. Thinkpads are the only thing that come close, and they only come close.

Anyone who's ever spent more than a couple days in China (or HK, or Singapore, or Taiwan, really) can tell you that very, very little of what you see published about China/Chinese people in the western media is accurate. Much of it is hype

I agree - East LA, South LA, all are not nearly as safe as West LA. My main point is that West LA, as a whole (and by that, I mean you never have to leave it), is safer than SF, which is more akin to taking the different east/west/south LA

West LA / Santa Monica, which is similar in size and population to SF, is significantly safer than San Francisco. I've lived for extended periods in both locations. For example, you don't have to take all the change out of your ashtrays an
