One possibility is that in the JeroMQ test, they allocated enough memory for the JVM so that GC wasn't as expensive as explicitly dealing with memory management in the C++ test.

I doubt there's any trivial solutions to this, but one simple scenario would be to limit the amount of 'likes' an account can have..but that could also cause FB to implode.

I'm not of those people who thinks all tech valuations are insane, but I think it is hard to justify twitter being worth 150x their quarterly revenue (~$36b valuation/~$240m revenue). I understand twitter's valuation reflects

Yeah I don't think we're talking about the same 'customers'. I would not consider people who want to build something as a subset of the people we're talking about when we say 'everyone should learn code'.

I actually disagree. Maybe this sounds like nitpicking, but I think it would be much more beneficial for non-technical people to be familiar with high-level, commercially used concepts in computing such as servers, databases, how the web wo

I hope Tim Cook is watching this. Google missed earnings and the stock WENT UP. Investors love that they're trying new things and are doing everything they can to grow. On the other hand, Apple is trying to horde as much cash as possib

Tim Cook can sandbag the iPhone business all he wants. While they can still bring in a ton of cash from profits, it won't trick wall street into driving their stock price up to a $1000. Maybe that's not his intention.

It depends what type of software developer you are. If you're the type who scours the web for open source tools to solve your problems, generalizing your challenges as coding problems, then maybe math isn't useful. Having a logica

I believe this has more to do with CS in public schools versus race and gender issues. I went to Palo Alto High School, got a college degree in CS, and was not even aware my high school offered AP computer science until after I graduated...

Twitter is also a leading silicon valley tech company with hundreds of extremely intelligent employees. You could easily argue that they may have one of the best engineering staffs in the world. Given that, of course they would use open sou

I think spam is spam no matter who sends it (engineer or recruiter). If I send or receive a random message, it'll be just that: a random message in an inbox. Such messages are usually ignored. While recruiting for my startup, I've

This article is just full of it in every regard. Menlo park is one freeway exit and one train stop closer to SF than Palo Alto. It would probably save you about 5 minutes (at most) in a ~45 minute driving commute.
