I see a lot of people complaining "we don't have enough programmers", while not adjusting themselves to account for the lack of supply they freely admit exists. They've tried exploiting people in places with worse econom

I've never met a programmer who was any good that wasn't mostly self-educated. In order to be successful in the fluid world of development, one must always be learning, and the information is out there, for free, ripe for the pick

I'd suggest that you don't need a CS degree to teach high-school level programming. I'd suspect many existing high school teachers, if given a tour of the involved concepts and resources, would be able to lead a group of stud

I can confirm on the screen, I was impatient and did not seek out an ips screen on my x230 - it has awful viewing angles. My wife has an X1 2nd gen and the split backspace is something I must have repressed, good call there. Total shit. I w

I feel compelled to bring up how cheap, modular and abundant bad-ass second-hand thinkpads are. Not to mention that even the new-generation keyboards are amazing, and put the shallow crap on my macbook pro to shame. The money you'd spe

I like this idea, but the pedant in me is annoyed that they chose an apple LED Cinema/Thunderbolt Display lookalike for their promo images. This display is one of the few mainstream monitors one can not just plug an HDMI cable into. It

Love it. Back in 2012 I asked @gruber on twitter if he thought it was ok to submit a resume in markdown, his response was: "For the right kind of job, I’d wager it’s an advantage to submit in Markdown."

I guess I think those things to be the building materials, and folder structure/routing/etc to be the stuff I don't mind making my self. I get how this might be opposite for others though.

Give me a box of boards and nails any day. All my ikea furniture is rickety and much of it is starting to look dated. I just spent a good amount of time over the last few months building a prototype for an application in Meteor and it has b

The struggle is real. I've been doing Pomodoro w/ a timer and finding it helpful. Found a lot of the stuff here related to that process for me. The first one of the day is still the hardest though. Nothing harder than starting.

I wonder if the train company just decided to keep the train running without consulting with the girl's family and proposing other options.

My entire opposition to this is based on the idea that slowing an accelerating a train is grossly more inefficient in terms of pollution and fuel waste than just finding a way to get her to the next station on a transport that does not weig

I'm not sure I follow. I understood it that they're keeping the station open solely for her and stopping the train to align with her schedule. They're not (to my knowledge) doing this for anyone else, so it seems to me like s

Monetary cost, sure. What about the cost on the environment to slow the train down and bring it back up to speed?

I see a lot of people using "agile" and Scrum™ interchangeably. Am I just a deluded fool, or is the agile manifesto completely ignored in practice? People talk about "agile methodology" and I wonder "doesn't t
