Ooh, I'd forgotten about the wrapper scripts. And yeah, the other thing that made it work, I guess, was having the machine image be very minimal, very tightly controlled, and very infrequently changed - so you didn't have to worry

Don't know if they still use it (I suspect so!) but at least as of 2015 Amazon was using a homebrewed deployment service called Apollo, which could spin up a VM from an internally developed Linux image then populate it with all the sof

Definitely recommend this textbook as a great read - it remains one of the very few textbooks I've read end-to-end and genuinely enjoyed.

I barely use my printer, but here's some anecdotal evidence of why I still have one: - I printed out my COVID vaccine certificates and lateral flow test proof to get entry to a club, because it's in an area of the city with poor m

Here's another nice video where the author is doing some more involved modelling, without any talking. It's good at 2x speed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7h-8McvQe0

Yeah. Something like a standard set of protocols on top of an existing peer-to-peer bus, with a good set of supporting libraries, would have been great. I love the idea of service advertising and standard service APIs.

Although, thinking about it, I wonder if the connector is designed for sequencing (power/ground first, then data) and if the linear insertion of the jack plug caused issues with that, since when the plug is being inserted the connector

Ah, was that the origin of the name I wonder? Definitely would have been a nice idea. I'm also not fond of the custom connector.

I guess the differentiator is that Jacdac is a higher level protocol. RS232, RS485 and CAN are just 'send some data down this pipe' deals, and RS232/RS485 don't even have a particularly standard way of framing data. I ha

I find this point of view utterly mystifying. Making sure you don't miss your flight only costs a couple of hours, and the effort of being organised enough to leave on time. Missing the flight has a cost of lots of money, many more hou

TL;DW - prior to the invention of the jerry can, forces used fragile thin-walled disposable canisters to transport fuel. These often leaked, causing logistical issues. Pre-WWII Germany sunk a surprising amount of time into designing the per

I'm reminded of Honda Motorcycle and its habit of making odd small-run bikes, such as the Valkyrie Rune or the NM4 Vultus. Both of those are in the premium segment of an already premium market (at least in the US/UK/etc) but

Ah, is the WARC format the reason it's called 'Warrior'? It seems like a very strange name for an archival program.

It has rather different connotations in Britain. As far as I understand it from Americans I know, quite a few people in the US have a fascination with where their, and others', ancestors came from, so it could be a fairly innocuous q

Yes, the barrel connector actually has three contacts. The inner and outer part of the metal barrel are insulated from each other - the outer is ground and the inner is +V. The pin in the middle only carries data.

We use routers from the FriendlyElec/FriendlyARM NanoPi range - they're pretty much the same deal: custom firmware built on top of OpenWRT. The advantage with the NanoPis is they're tiny, and cheap enough to be almost disposa

Well, this one is built on top of OpenWRT. I guess it depends whether what they've built has added enough utility to be considered different from it?
