I'll just re-post the same comment I posted on the original posting of this... I take offense to idea of speed as a priority, though not necessarily to the whole article. > All else being equal, the fastest company in any market wil

Also, looking for proof in a complex system will often lead you down the path of least resistance (the path for which it's easiest to find supporting proof; not necessarily the best path). So asking for proof is just evidence of a lack

Synology DSM has great auto-update systems :) But, absolutely correct.

Both systems have their downsides. The simpler system generally has fewer, and that makes it preferable in many ways. But there could also be a different simple system that has fewer downsides. It's important to first think of the acti

Shrug. I've got about 1.5 TB from the last ten or twelve years, and I do often go back through the organized albums and events. Often it's to find something specific, often just looking for something good, often just for nostalgia

Just a +1 for the Synology NAS products. I'm frequently amazed every time I use it how clean the UI is and how they basically implemented a full window manager for the underlying Linux system in a web app. It's exactly what a NAS

There's also a significant unknown cost from the level of uncertainty surrounding the effect of climate change. It could be drastic, or it could be mild. We don't know, but we're rolling the dice anyway due to inaction.

Given the general rate of change and the impact even half this effect could have on climate, with a huge amount of hand waving, I'm inclined to fully support this assumption just so we have a slim chance of getting it 12% handled befor

For sure. But that's a far more nuanced argument than "twice as fast." :)

Neither are strictly correct in isolation. Of course the complexity matters, and of course the coefficient and reality factors matter. Often focusing on a core algorithm that's far too complex will save you time, money, and grief down

Agree, this is an awful long article for a bug report. Sure, it's a bad bug, but it's still a bug. Treating Apple like they wronged us morally isn't exactly the most effective path to a timely solution.

Sadly, I think there are some confounding factors to the lack of success in this story. If this is the same manner in which the author communicates a scientific theory to the community, it's not exactly surprising it hasn't been r

I think of this like local vs. global maxima. Competition is one local maxima, but personally I believe cooperative systems are the global maxima. However, cooperation is more complex, more difficult, and perhaps contrary to human nature. D

Never have I read more love between the lines of such an intelligent, thorough, and obtuse criticism. Nowhere will you find more humanity than the impossibility of perfection, and what is poetry but the shared search for that humanity? Impe
