I created a phone app once to function as an alarm clock I could set for someone else. Kinda like a hotel "wake up call" except this would call, ring for 10 seconds, hang-up and repeat for like 20 minutes.

Dogmatic unit testing is overrated. For backend testing, I've had amazing success following a few simple principles: 1. Abstract and mock code you don't control that require network calls. 2. Use frameworks that support database a

This is really awesome! I've used typeform a bunch for testing ideas and collecting submissions and was always put off by their pricing structure - it's not friendly to boot strappers. Will definitely try this for my next form :)

I've seen specific Jordan Peterson YouTube videos URLs blocked on messenger as well. Sometimes they're completely non-controversial as well.

Also not worried about proprietary since I got started learning programming through a pirated version of Mathematica and solving ProjectEuler problems.

I had the pleasure of working closely with Yehuda (one of the earlier prize winners) at Google where he works on TV and Movie recommendations (Search "what to watch" to see his team's work). He's extremely intelligent an

Hey HN! We built a service for launching mobile app surveys in 5 lines of code. Over our careers, my cofounders and I have worked on several early-stage products and one thing that we observed is that user research and feedback are critical

Did I read Ben Kuhn's article right? For engineers at almost every level (except maybe right out of school), they can easily make 100k/yr more by choosing a big co. So if money is all you're optimizing for, it's never wo

Yep, I agree. Even though it's normal on mobile devices, it's weird behavior for the web. Given the way flutter is designed (sharable code base, eVeRyThInG iS a WiDgEt), I don't see an easy and obvious solution here.

Either the journalist has interpreted Roku's claims incorrectly, or Roku is spreading falsehoods. It's a very common practice for streaming services to make crazy demands about the devices they're on. Roku[1], Google TV[2] an

There is an even simpler approach that doesn't involve cherry-pick or rebase. Instead of doing this: ``` checkout f2 git rebase f1 push -fu origin f2 checkout f3 git rebase f2 push -fu origin f3 ``` Do this instead: ``` git checkout f2

It's not as bad as you think, the PRs are written on their own and the engineer in question probably blanket approves all of them every morning while they're checking email (quickly scanning them looking for automated red flags).

I think this is a little inaccurate. Google's monorepo does have branching but it is a second class citizen with minimal support that most engineers aren't aware of unless you've carried a product through many releases. That

Is it possible that Apple and/or Google being the market leaders in China/Russia is better for the world than their foreign counter parts? If they're invested in these markets, could they influence them in more positive ways?
