Not to mention the Canadian Wheat Board, perhaps the most egregious of all monopsonies (apparently it's not a "monopoly" because it is the only BUYER of wheat).

If you like, I could also point to the convenient dropping of calls when they are passed from Wind Mobile's network to Rogers' (and the subsequent marketing campaign around that fact) as another example of sleazy behaviour. This does not ha

I would take a broader view of it like so: would not having access to the internet be seriously crippling economically? Are market mechanisms providing service to all Canadians at a reasonable price? I'm going to argue yes to the first poin

First, you could not possibly have picked a worse analogy than a supermarket. The grocery business in Canada is one of the most brutally competitive anywhere, with low margins and a large number of players. But back to the issue at hand: it

Here's another reason why this is bullshit... this is an excerpt from an article I'm working on: The biggest problem with these caps is that they are, plain and simply, anticompetitive. Probably illegally so. Let’s take Bell’s internet serv

This is EXACTLY what regulatory capture is all about. Bell knows the game and played it masterfully. Ask for the moon - ask for really ridiculous things, but expect to only get half of those things. The CRTC, wanting to seem "reasonable" an

Great for entrepreneurs, but eventually it will be the relatively unsophisticated angels who will get burned by these valuations. I have no problem with that, really. In 2001 it was different - everyone was playing with public money through

The real problem isn't even that they're charging by the gigabyte (although they are, and I strongly dislike it). No, the REAL problem is that they preferentially exclude their own services from these charges/caps. For example: If you get B

I had a similar experience today... my post made it to the front page and was unceremoniously killed. Apparently when you say you're hiring a billion people, you'd better mean it. ;-)

It's supposed to be a little silly - I was just trying to put a light-hearted spin on our hiring process. The type of people who enjoyed it would probably enjoy working with us. I suppose I overreached with the title?

I actually have done that regularly, and we consistently get - zero responses. Look, I agree the title was silly (although did anyone honestly think we were hiring a billion people?) - but I would have gladly edited it if a moderator had as

A fair point. I've updated those locations. It's actually only about a 25 minute drive from Union Station to our office. I lived downtown for the last year and did the reverse commute - it wasn't bad at all :-)

For reference, I own a 13" MBA and the build quality is exceptional. It is quite simply the best computing product I have ever owned. Lots of gents around our office have Dells, and they tend to be built like brick shithouses, so to speak.

I've noticed that HN readers all tend to think about startups in a similar way - thus the list of blogs here was no surprise. What contrarian blogs have you found that take entrepreneurship from a different angle, viciously cutting through
