178K is the biggest I can find a screenshot proof of: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Aa7f-uvCMAQF1th.png Thats on one site out of 8 that share the same cluster/platform, so the net total would have been in the mid 200K's. edit: props to char

I really like how when you look at it, most of their scaling was removing things from the environment and really honing the platform down to what it needed to be.

Me too man but I gave up that dream a decade ago. The hot-new-scripting-language community and top-two-or-three-linux-distro communities just never seem to get along well enough to eliminate this needless layer of duplication and complexity

According to my notes from when I first put that together -XX:+UseParNewGC is automatically implied by +UseConcMarkSweepGC, for which my source was this very old web page about a very old jvm version (again, dark art): http://cybergav.in/2

Hi Josh, Thanks for offering to help. Your colleague Jacob Kessler wrote the closest thing I have to a bible on this: http://engineering.linkedin.com/26/tuning-java-garbage-colle... That (and a truckload of trial & error) led me to

I have the opposite problem, I can't get java to use "enough" memory. Every time we double it in production that leads to another few weeks of re-jiggering jvm flags and ratios and grepping&graphing the garbage collection log or starin

Yea I would love to see any kind of data, graphs, explanations, war stories, etc on this. We've invested a lot of manhours in tuning our CMS GC settings, so I need more than "its the latest" to justify a few weeks of testing & rollou

That's a really nice status dashboard, tracking and publicly displaying your 98th% is really cool. On the other hand stuff like this: "13:17 UTC We are seeing unicorns ..." Comes off as un-professional at exactly the wrong moment.

Hi Jason, thanks for taking questions. Do you see Etsy as competition? You mention a custom built supply chain tech and strong mobile/ecommerce sales. You also share a lot of stats and operational details about the biz on your blog. Would

I've got a pet theory here that this is going to be a trend over the next few years. A lot of companies github's age were built on the "we misinterpreted devops as noops" attitude, which works great for a few years, but somewhere in the y

This is basically true of all US oriented news sites. Also, generally monday and tuesday morning are ahead of the rest of the week. The best time to try to get something to 'go viral' is about 10 - 11am EST tuesday morning.

Its not scaling if its not chock full of numbers (and maybe even graphs). There's not one mention of requests per second or latency in this. Users/capacity per shard, bottlenecks run into, etc.

I'd like to welcome the github ops/dbas to the club of people who've learned the hard way that automated database failover usually causes more downtime than it prevents. Here's sortof the seminal post on the matter in the mysql community:

Yes and no. Oddly enough, Oracle has owned the most important part of mysql (innodb) for years, so them buying the rest of it was almost a benefit to have it all under one roof. They then went on to put out a very good release (5.5) that
