I think it's more like publishing. They lease a bunch of space (apartment space, ad space), and they have a bunch of clients who want to use the space (people, ads), and they match them together.

I really like the Mathematica language/environment. You can prototype stuff incredibly quickly, the algorithms are fast, and the viz is really nice. I wish the open-source alternatives weren't crap ... or that I had the time/intelligence t

What he's saying applies to research nowadays too, especially biology-related. People in e.g. my lab (neuroscience) come from EE, Bio, Physics, Medicine, Stats, CS ... It's working, though. Care is getting better than ever. Science i

If you can't hold the territory, then surely it wasn't really "taken" to begin with? More like "visited"? It is probably a symptom of our ill-calibrated tactics that even the lexicon we use to talk about this is illogical.

They tested their software on 5 weeks of data from mid-2005, chosen because those weeks have no "atypical" movements. Which means that this algorithm would've been just as cooked as any human being would, no more and no less. The problem i

Ha! I chuckled because I assumed he was making good-natured meta-humor about the rising levels of PG appreciation going on... I guess what I like about HN is the high expectations it allows us to keep.

I think his best option is to sell TM2, but "Pay me what you think TM2 is worth." This way, he sticks to the letter of the free upgrade promise - one can get it for free - yet benefits from what seems to be a very profitable way to price

I agree with you that Lean & Bootstrapped are just buzzwords that say nothing about the product. But I think MVP does. He's saying the product is simple. It's useful when giving feedback to know the author considers this a minimal prod

"I wouldn't build anything critical on it until at least version 0.2" Ha! It's a brave new world. It used to be you needed a whole version number under your belt before critical stuff could be built..

Would you mind saying a bit more? They're showing up at my uni. in a couple weeks, would be interested in knowing a bit about them. Specifically, are there opportunities to deploy my elite computational statistics-fu? ;)

We share common ancestors with houseflies who have a day to find a mate. We were at one point small furry proto-mammals who mated almost exclusively by smell and aggressiveness. It no longer takes too long to evaluate intelligence. But

They released the video, didn't they? That's the raw info (assuming they haven't doctored it). It is true, however, that they stamped it with their own interpretation, which is that the slaying of a dozen people was indiscriminate. This is

We wouldn't ever have heard of this soldier if it weren't for the WikiLeaks video - and if they hadn't sensationalized it, nobody would ever have seen the video. They did exactly what they were supposed to do: get the raw info out there, so
