If Google and/or Apple have gone to the trouble to build the network side of this edge-computing infrastructure, presumably it's because they think their customers will see enough benefit from this to buy more devices. But then wh

I believe they're suggesting a completely made-up skill, like "forensic poetry specialist" or "deep water ice-carver".

I don't see this ever happening. As you say, residential ISPs used to provide additional services to their customers like web hosting, email, NNTP, shell access, time synch, IRC, mirrors of popular archives. They don't anymore

This fan wiki seems to say the EGA version had a unique title screen: https://spacequest.fandom.com/wiki/Space_Quest_IV:_Roger_Wil...

My subconscious has just dredged up the memory "you take a good long whiff of the acid, and .. whoah, talk about clean sinuses!". That might have been from the later remastered SQ I even?

My memory of those times was that floppy disks were fragile enough, and software expensive enough, that you would take the original disks out only to install the game (or cough make a backup copy for a friend) and then carefully put them

My perhaps rose-tinted memory is that the deaths were pretty comic in Space Quest.

I am almost certain that I played an EGA version of SQ IV, even if there was also a "VGA optional" version.

I still try to find time to sit down and listen to an album from start to finish - it's kind of like the musical equivalent of spending an hour in a gallery exhibition of a single artist's work.

The https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superconducting_Super_Collider comes to mind. Emperor Nero invested millions of man-hours into the Corinth Canal, but that did at least eventually get some use a mere 1,800 years later

It's done like that to try and approximately apportion the cost based on each user's use of the infrastructure. The cost is almost entirely driven by peak use though, so what would actually be "fairer" (or at least more

Kind of makes me wonder how far away tiny, cheap, automated doorknocker drones are.

It's not too surprising that the payoff times are similar - the cost to manufacture something (that doesn't require large amounts of human labour) tends to approximate the energy input required.

That plays it down far too much, because what's actually interesting here is that we have been able to identify three specific nearby examples.

The idea is to fully disconnect the faulted element from the power system. In particular with transformers, you don't want it backfed from the low voltage side if the high voltage side is isolated.

It seems to be pretty common in the maritime industry. There were crews stuck on ships for months during the pandemic.

I think a cyber attack seems unlikely, if only because going from tripping those breakers to the bridge collapsing is a hell of a rube goldberg machine. (And if that was only an accident, and their only goal was "make the lights flicke

It would not be unusual for the protection design to have the LV and HV breakers on either side of the transformer linked, so that if one trips the other does too. So you can't necessarily read anything in to the fact that both tripped

I thought the image transform was conceptually done on a grid of infinitely-repeating copies of the image in the spatial domain?

(This is a response both to you and the GP) Can you really look at the Final Cut Pro example given in the article and say, yes, this is the smooth user experience that Apple is aiming for?

Assuming you don't go so close that tidal effects tear the probe apart, the g-forces should only be those imposed by the probe's thrusters firing during the assist. When the thrusters aren't firing it's just in free-fal
