I don't have this experience. I like to prototype by writing code (or type signatures), and then refactor a lot from the initial solution. That's easier to do if the syntax is reasonably concise (the other half is to have good typ

I'm not saying it's justified, but I think the syntax is also a big impediment (just like for my daily driver, OCaml). Ada looks pretty verbose and annoying to write code in, at least if one wants to use it for side projects, smal

The point is that Tesla can do over the air updates, which means (in theory!) that the experiment could be gamed because it would use a different version of the software.

For the record, ocamllsp uses merlin under the hood, and other tools, so it can be a more integrated experience and be easier to setup.

That's a very American idea. Nowhere else would people think that money is speech, especially in the sense of free speech. I guess it joins "corporations are people" in that category of ideas.

But python has instead the "insert \ sometimes" rule, which isn't better.

Is there any sign that other languages are going to adopt sigils? I can't think of any new language that does, and no one ever talks of the idea. If anything, types are getting more popular and will probably totally subsume sigils?

Google is also trying to imitate Apple here, with Dart and flutter. The only reasonable explanation for these (especially Dart being exhumed from its thumb so it can become the only language supported by flutter) is vendor lock in.

Sidenote: you should really learn about homeopathic dilution and how to synthesize the same cancer drug as I did. This is unrelated to being a "homeopathy sceptic", a "no-diluter" person, or anything else. --- Really? If

Interesting, is this common on windows? On Linux I've never seen precompiled C++ libraries (at least not these with templates) back when I compiled stuff more often (read: back when I used gentoo). Do g++ and clang++ support precompile

Neither tuples nor frozen dicts offer efficient (logarithmic or constant time) updates, like lists or balanced trees or HAMT do. You can't really write a program with only immutable structures in python, unless you accept it will be un

What supports that statement exactly? If you split your big projects into crates it would recompile pretty fast. C++ can also take ages to compile (eg. compiling Firefox from scratch). Keeping your code modular to get decent compile times s

About the refcounting approach, you may want to look at the Perceus paper. It's refcounting with dynamic reuse of memory that isn't shared (like a sort of runtime linear typing), and it's used in Koka for functional programmi

That's interesting. The recent post about a fast dataframe library in rust (polars, I think) and its python bindings is also telling. Py3O might be a rust+python kind of secret weapon in terms of speed and productivity... And it's

I keep hearing that, but in practice one can have macros/code generation in a static language. Maybe meta programming takes a bit more effort, but it's the kind of thing best done in a well tested library. A lot of modern typed la

My bet is that there's no notion of iterator (or generics, for that matter) so at best that would be like Go's loops, very limited in purpose.

I wonder if it's like insanities like SIGPIPE: it's kind of useful if you write IO tools in a few dozen/hundred lines of C. You don't need to carry around explicit context, or check if writes failed, or anything. Of cour

What you're describing is using regex to _lex_ html, not parse it. The parser is easy to build once you have a lexer (after all most of XML's unpleasantness comes from escaping). It still isn't the same thing as parsing with

Strings have nothing to do with objects. You can write a string library, eg. [sds]( https://github.com/antirez/sds ). It's just not standard.

by c-cube 6y ago
It's also because other languages have better designed strings. D, go, rust, etc. have pointers too but their string handling is based on slices and arrays, which are approximately 10,000 times less footgunny.
