math arose firstly as a language and formalism in which statements could be made with no room for doubt. the sciences took it further and said that not only should the statements be free of doubt, but also that they should be testable in th

this is the question that the greeks wrestled with over 2000 years ago. at the time there were the sophists (modern llm equivalents) that could speak persuasively like a politician. over time this question has been debated by philosophers,

Fantastic course and website, thank you professors for this valuable contribution. I would ask for exercises and practices attached to the course that one could do to penetrate the BS - this would be invaluable as we increasingly get bombar

indeed, these machines do a great mimicry of "reasoning", we get fooled by it. the word reasoning has been subverted by those pushing these llms, and we all have bought-in. quite a magic trick this illusionist has pulled on us.

Perfectly echos my thoughts as a 25+ year veteran engineer who has been laid off 3 times. Your writing style is poetic as well. I would add a few more. 1) There is no permanancy in tech, only impermanancy - hence, stay on your toes, be a le

Wow, thanks for sharing this beautiful essay by a legend that captures the essence of the llm debate. That, the use of formal languages - although an evil (since it is not a natural human language) is essential to avoid nonsense (ie halluci

bloated PyTorch general purpose tooling aimed at data-scientists now needs a rethink. Throwing more compute at the problem was never a solution to anything. The silo’ing of the cs and ml engineers resulted in bloating of the frameworks and

the extent to which a random string is a "theorem" of some system can be measured i am guessing. ie, given some text, to what extent is it "grounded" in some sense in facts.

i would think public outcry by influencers on social media (such as this thread) is a better deterrent, and also establishes a public datapoint and exhibit for future reference.. as it is hard to scale the tarpit.
