This is a good article that every programmer should pay attention to. You will get older. This is a replay of a comment I made a few years ago which strikes me as being somewhat timeless. —————————————————- I'm 60+. I've been co

Out of all the things mentioned in the article, it doesn’t mention tables which to me are one of the unsung heroes of all good GUI frameworks. They are so deceptively simple looking and yet, once you peek under the hood, the amount of compl

I cut out sugar about two years ago. I recently had blood work for a yearly physical (almost 2 years later than it should have been). All my levels (cholesterol, triglycerides, etc.) were significantly better than before. Highly recommended

My young adult children live with me and don’t talk to me. I can’t imagine what it’ll be like when they’ve moved out.

I’ve been amazed at how well PlantNet works. It’s identified a number of invasive species in my yard that I’d otherwise have remained ignorant of.

I second the Syntorial recommendation. You can get a number of lessons as a free introduction and it’s a very hands on approach that allows you to “get your hands dirty” as others have suggested.

I’d say it was because the VAX (and the PDP-11 family that preceded it) has one of the cleanest instruction sets of any processor family that was ever extensively used. It was almost as easy as C to program in its assembly language.

It looks like a great book, but when I started doing the exercises I realized that the appendices where the answers are aren't there, so it's pretty hard to verify what I'm computing.

I had a comment on that HN thread in which I mentioned how I liked elm, but probably wouldn’t use it again for many of the reason given in that post. I’ve made a liar out of myself. I needed a GUI for a project I’ve been working on using El

A short, but hopefully relevant anecdote: I play the sax. A musician friend called me last summer to get me to do a part on a new song he’d produced. Since it was during the summer surge I said I’d do it at home and send him the part, but h

Not to mention the very real threat that if anyone seriously started challenging Goodreads, Amazon could put what for them is a trivial amount of resources into making the changes it needed to keep in front.

I own a Model 3. So far, about 20 months in, it has been a very reliable car that has required close to zero maintenance. I can’t say that for any other of the 10 or so cars I’ve owned. It’s a pleasure to drive. I only use auto pilot on lon

I’m going to guess that given the sharp reduction in staff at all newspapers, what you are looking at is a “get it out” mentality that doesn’t give writers and editors the time to spend that would result in clear, informative language.

That budget was essential. A hundred Feymans would have been useless without those thousands of engineers and workers who built and operated the plants Kringle Washington and Tennessee that produced fissionable enough fissionable material.

This reminds me of George Wallace’s famous realization that his long term institutionalization of racism in Alabama was wrong when he was getting close to death’s door. It was kind of nice to hear, but lots of damage was done.
