I’d bet she was probably thinking about resistor values while writing the title! You would always say 1.6k resistor and not 1600kohm resistor

Thank you for this comment. One thing that I have noticed myself and some other engineers I know being susceptible to is the desire to view the world as systematic, ordered, certain, and understandable. It’s a desire to find the root cause

As the article shows, your choice to take the risk may have effects far beyond your immediate circle. I don’t begrudge you for making the choice but wish you well and hope your family stays safe.

Is this just your OS's / the X windowing system's middle click paste functionality, or is this something that Notion itself does? I've never run into this before.

Are all of your assets original? The avatars look very suspiciously like the overland trainer sprites from Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire. When I was a kid I made “custom” Pokemon trainer sprites for fun and these look like something I would ha

It is....hard to take this article seriously when it compares the Chinese cultural revolution’s forced resettlement of millions of people to white collar workers moving out of Silicon Valley voluntarily because they CAN work remotely and WA

This makes me sick, because I could see myself and many people I know doing the same thing, under the right circumstances, without even very much coercion needed, just writing a bit of business logic... Totalitarianism is sustained by ordin

I totally agree, I have the same kind of setup with an X series thinkpad and love it. Do you have any good dual monitor USB-C docks you could recommend? I’ve been wanting to expand my work station a bit.

To be quite honest I also thought, once upon a time, that I could NEVER leave my proper 7 row X220t keyboard for the shitty new island keyboards in new thinkpads. I now type happily on my X1 Yoga. It’s a very good keyboard, you get used to

It’s people writing stuff in Amharic, an Ethiopian language, because they think it looks sinister and “cursed”. It’s not great because Amharic is an actual language used by millions of people ):

I don’t think it’s the same thing as what we think of as class. I found these comment threads made some of the differences clear to me: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24556347 https://news.ycombinator.com&#

This is a great article. It is really sad how "DevOps" has become just another way to label the Ops team, or the developer tools team, or the release managers, without trying to break any silos between the teams...

Hi Ilya, I saw in your linked post that this started as an internal tool to assess candidates which you then spun out. Could you talk more about that? How many people did you screen and hire with this tool?

Queuing theory is a branch of mathematics. It is useful, in a software context, for things like predicting server capacity and predicting response times of programs. It is also regularly used to predict things like hospital wait times. Here

You can intuit how much “active time” it will take you, personally, to do something. How can you intuit how long a task is going to spend in a queue waiting to be worked on because your team doesn’t have capacity, or another team “down the

I am not sure if you got the point of the linked story. The C++ appointment software is a trivial fun side project. The point is that she had to quit her terrible job to even get into the right headspace to do anything useful on this trivia
