I think the problem here is people in the West see things in the following way: Chinese system inherently evil. Western system inherently good. When a bad thing happens in the West; we condemn it but don't see it as the overall system

This is an incredibly naive take. The U.S. couldn't care less about democracy in Cuba or anywhere else. It has a long history of supporting brutal dictators in South and Central America as long as they were right wing and pro American.

I think for us it was more about defining our relationship to other people. If you say "I have a partner" people can't understand without further explanation what that means. Also marriage doesn't have to be expensive.
