On this note: I’m sad ruby style guides generally ban “and” and “or”. raise(“a long error string”) unless valid This reads much worse, when the string pushes the line near max width, than: valid or raise(“.. Of course it’s

For some reason this one feels right to express with if-not to me too. The one place I’ll often use unless is things like: return unless valid raise unless h.key?(k) I think it might have something to do with: 1. How abundantl

I’m pretty sure that’s just the typical watering requirements of pothos. It’s an extremely neglect-tolerant houseplant.

Lightning? Certainly at the time it was released it was a far superior connector than the alternatives. USB-C wins out IMO but only because of its now-ubiquity. Lightning is still, I think, a slightly better connector for a handheld.

To add to this, for people suggesting that renewables are sufficient and that we should abandon nuclear for some reason or another, this report does a good job of motivating nuclear as a critical part of the solution: https://ene

Eh, maybe. Lots of "poisons" have hormetic effects. Intuition isn't always a great guide here, and studies seem significantly conflicted in the "modest intake" range.

Shopify has been around for a while—since before Amazon became the everything-retailer that they are now. It started out of frustration at the myriad annoyances in trying to get set up using osCommerce and other tools of that generation. (D

HN's markup is idiosyncratic but similar enough to markdown that it's hard for occasional commenters to remember the details. It's also minimal enough that users are already used to parsing extra-syntactic markup visually.

At Shopify, we do a similar thing using a tool we wrote called Shadowenv[1], which evaluates little programs to manipulate the environment on directory entry/exit. It's a lot like direnv, but it can't do anything that makes i

This was already the case: almost nowhere really uses Local Meridian Time. Greenwich maybe. Everywhere else, even when located in the most appropriate timezone to line up solar and clock noon, is _already_ off by anywhere from zero to thirt

I kind of disagree. I don't mind apps that bring their own visual styling and don't reuse OS components/styling, but I get _really_ annoyed by apps where gestures behave slightly differently. Things such as the exact toleranc

This would be kind of fun to write a solver for. You'd burn the first few guesses to get some positional constraints, then filter a rainbow table down to viable guesses. I'm not sure you'd be able to get a very good success r

Yeah I’m sympathetic to this argument and I myself am often annoyed by rubocop’s apparent heuristic of “is it possible to encode an opinion on this? Great then let’s do it” … but in this case, I think this rule is beyond justifiable.
