The thing that has always turned me off of Grooveshark (compared to Rdio and friends) is extremely-poorly-curated content. Albums are frequently duplicated, mislabeled, out of order, and so on. That, and it's much more legally questionable.

I wrote a similar thing a few months ago. https://github.com/stefanpenner/rebinder/blob/master/lib/reb... My syntax was far more sarcastic and less legitimate, however. eg: add = Fixnum.☃.+ add3 = add.∂(3) assert_equal 7, ad

I'm kind of suspecting this started off as "I want to make a simple kernel module", not "I wonder how I can make my computer rickroll me more often".

Yup. Producing several megatons of diamond in labs would be many orders of magnitude easier than harvesting it from another planet. Even if it were the moon that were made of diamond, I strongly suspect that the energy requirements to harve

It's a useful analogy. Heroku abstracts server configuration away from Rails development to the point where it's (theoretically) completely unnecessary to know /anything/ about it. If this does the same thing in a different context, I think

I think most people that have a 9-5 and do a small amount of after-hours contracting, or regularly stay a little bit late to finish something up will be voting 40-50. That's how I voted, even though if you subtract slacking time and lunch,

I have a small SproutCore 1.6 project that I'll be moving to 2.0 in the coming weeks/months as it gets closer to release. I took an initial stab at it early in the alpha, and it is much, much, much more developer-friendly. I am very excited

My expectation would be that the specific photos I tag Person A in are automatically visible to Person A. I think this is reasonable, and other concerns come up if a person is unable to see which photos they are tagged in. Making the entire

Both, really. It's a sort of clever way to deal with a problem that plagues non-savvy users.

The biggest difference is that Spotify is curated content. On Grooveshark, if you search for an album, you may get three copies, each missing songs and improperly named. Spotify has one real release of the album.

I think the real problem here is all the regulatory and financial barriers to competing in the telecomm arena. The free market has a hard time sorting itself out when there are so few players. I don't have a solution to propose, but this is

No, it's not. It should be reasonable to have an expectation that the people writing laws have a working understanding of the subjects they're writing them on. Very, very few 70-year-olds have a sufficient understanding of the Internet. It'

I don't understand why everyone feels a need to argue over whether Apple is a Software company or a Hardware company. This is not a fruit-or-vegetable question. They do a lot of both, with roughly equal degrees of effort and success.

It took me five minutes of reading the changelog to figure out what I have to stop using in 3.1. There are additional features that can be integrated into a workflow at whatever pace is desired. People are making a bigger deal of this than

I was going for the distance from some arbitrary spot in North America to some arbitrary spot way out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, where I'd assume the ocean is at its deepest, but this is interesting too.

Yup. My Telecommunications prof back in University told us you can approximate the speed of a network as 2c/3, so that sounds right on the button.

Just FYI, The circumference of earth is roughly 4 * 10^7 metres, and the speed of light is 3 * 10^8 m/s, so light can actually circle the globe almost 7.5 times per second. The depths of the oceans are just a few milliseconds away (40ms -is

...no. That's not how it works. Your wallet has a pool of private keys. Addresses are the corresponding public keys. You can send or receive from any address you have the private key for (minor simplification, but doesn't affect my point).

Agreed. This is why I really, really hope Rubinius manages to become "worth it" soon (or at least JRuby). The MRI core team, Tenderlove excluded, seem to give approximately zero shits about Rails.

Not quite. Your wallet can have an arbitrary number of addresses. You can receive at one address, then send that balance out to a dozen different people using a dozen different sending addresses.
