First thing I thought of as well. It's a fantastic project and I would hate for Canon's response to this to negatively affect them, whether it becomes hardening the device's firmware upgrade process to the point that the proj

"Is this just a case of ‘Nobody ever got fired for choosing Blackboard’?" Sadly I believe it is. My school recently moved off Blackboard for Canvas after at least ten years. While some teachers were relieved to move to a more mode

Bleeding edge has never been the point of Debian, it's one of the most stable and well tested distros out there. Things are upgraded only when necessary for the most part.

Not FOSS, but I can highly recommend Davinci Resolve. I actually have come to prefer it over Premiere and Vegas which have been my favorites for over a decade now. Compared to those two, it just feels like a much more modern, well polished

Honestly, unless you absolutely need Windows for critical programs/drivers, I would look into switching to Linux. While there are super hardened distros such as Qubes, even something more user friendly such as Debian and Fedora would b

You're correct, it's not a donation. However Purism right now is important in a way Comcast is not. Their work on the software side is making the GNU/Linux phone a reality and it will help both vendors and makers a like in th

What Thiel wants investigated and what the general HN user wants are very different things I would imagine. Personally I'm more concerned with what Google is doing with my data, and how much they are sharing with a PRISM like program t

Honestly I think this is a ridiculous take. Google's military contracts have been extremely controversial both publicly and inside Google. The thing is, if Google wants to exist in China, they must follow some orders. The US government

Growing up I had a family friend who was a park ranger in a popular hunting area (not California fwiw). The laws protecting wildlife from poachers are really strong and rangers take them very seriously. As a result, catching a poacher can o

I wouldn't be surprised if Mint and Ubuntu are both in a better state in that regard since I last used them. Last time I used Mint on my gaming rig, the bundled Mint drivers had something funky with them. I don't remember what it
